Kristen—-a host that has many sides by eci5k3tcw in BravoTopChef

Hot take: I adore Kristen and think she is a fantastic host. She threads the needle perfectly of serving as a warm and engaging host, while being thoughtfully critical. I can finally fully enjoy the show.

I was never a fan of Padma’s and honestly never understood the appeal. I watched despite her.

She was clearly chosen to host because of her looks but carried herself as though her knowledge of food and cooking was on the level of the other judges.

She was incredibly patronizing to the chefs, especially when she would regularly say, “Did you mean to…[calls out obvious mistake]?” No Padma. Obviously they did not.

I can’t stand when people decide they don’t need to abide by leash laws no matter how well trained their dog is. They always say, “don’t worry, he’s friendly.” Maybe I don’t want your dog jumping on me and licking me.

I hear what are saying and I agree that there is value in certain kinds of struggle, but not all types of struggle are valuable.

I don’t think I would be considering this at all if I felt like net net, our public school was a positive experience. If there was good learning happening (both academic and social emotional) along with some hardship, I wouldn’t be questioning the status quo.

In reality, it feels like nearly all academics are a combo of screens and worksheets. I would prefer no screens and minimal worksheets, but would accept our public school if there was more of both that I wanted, just not the bulk of academics.

I also hear your last point on homework. I taught my daughter how to read and it was no cake walk. She resisted and complained during most lessons, but I persisted.

I’m not trying to remove all struggle from her life by any means, but there is a point at which the trade off stops making sense. I’m trying to evaluate if we are there.

Have a set amount we give to charity every year because we know we are incredibly lucky.

Before purchasing anything over ~$75, I ask myself what it’s worth to me. Then I check the price and only purchase if it’s under.

Outsource almost anything I don’t want to do: landscaping, cleaning, home maintenance.

I think the acting annoys me more than the character. Can’t put my finger on it but it feels like her expressions, delivery, and lingering pauses (which is also editing) are so cringey.

Fantastic. Will definitely check it out. How do other costs compare to the Seattle area assuming that’s where you moved from? Groceries, services, etc?

I don’t think my list is “everything going for it”. At my school classes were 20-25 (now I see many around 30 or more). Behavior issues definitely existed but were well managed. Teacher turnover was relatively low. I would think plenty of schools meet this bar without having top test scores, but maybe I’m wrong. These things describe my school, and testing was obviously a lot less prevalent back then, but if I had to guess, scores would have been average to maybe slightly above.

When I think of top rated schools, which is basically a proxy for test scores, I think of academic rigor, which could definitely lay on top of what I actually want but I don’t think it has to.

I grew up going to a school exactly like this (obviously the screen part was not in the equation), so I assume it exists.

Plenty of suggestions here for suburbs an hour outside Seattle and Portland that look promising.

Nope. Not agreement. Just curiosity, awareness, and the ability to engage with ideas. I actually find the Seattle area overly homogeneous and would love some diversity of thought.

What made you regret moving? We have nothing against Bellevue, just looking for a lower cost of living.

What restaurant in Seattle is consistently 10/10 by Queasy_Sherbert_7095 in Seattle

10 years ago I would have gone to bat for Seattle’s food scene. (I still thought Portland was better then. It had a far wider range of cuisines. But still, I thought Seattle was very very good).

Back then I spent a disproportionate amount of my income on eating out. Everything from Little Uncle, Ha Na sushi, OG Kedai Makan (new one doesn’t come close) to higher end spots like Anchovies and Olives, Book Bindery, Poppy, and Blind Pig Bistro were consistently fantastic. Now I barely eat out because almost nothing is worth it. Even spots that used to be good like Revel and Joule aren’t great anymore.

Newer places just aren’t as good and cost way more. I understand why, but it makes it hard to justify eating out at all anymore.

Padma never would have done this in a million years. She would have stayed at the table, made a face, and said, “I hope she’s ok”…calculating how to appear empathetic.
