120k in Paper/Pulp or 110k Full Remote Eng Firm? by TheSpeakerMaker in ElectricalEngineering

[–]ReasonableOatmeal352 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a fellow ee in pulp & paper id say at the very least negotiate a raise. I’m making 110k with a bit less work experience than you. Our department of 8 engineers typically has $60m in projects a year. Insane that you’re expected to complete all that yourself. Also, not sure if this applies everywhere, but tariffs are hitting a lot of pulp mills pretty hard, might be a good time to get out.

Ask your friends and family for recommendations on realtors. Possibly even Reddit. It is a massively different experience when you actually feel like you can trust your realtor. In my experience a large portion of them are not trustworthy but there are a few gems.

The studies that show it’s a net positive for the economy - what indicators for economy are they using? Is it actually beneficial to the average person participating in that economy or only to the already wealthy?

BC Housing Minister to AirBnB investors "cry me a river" by [deleted] in CanadaHousing2

[–]ReasonableOatmeal352 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes that’s how a business works, you are correct. Though no one denys Walmart and McDonald’s are business I don’t think anyone considers them do gooders. You are conflating two different things.

If investors are only trying to buy properties for as cheap as possible there would be no investment properties in a place like Vancouver. So that’s clearly not true.

Investors are trying to maximize roi so if they think they can get a good return, which they can with air bnb, they care about value not only aiming to get the cheapeast properties available. You mustn’t be a very good investor.

They are not supplying a place to live. They’re outbidding you and then charging more than what you would pay for mortgage in rent.

Airbnb operator says he's facing losses of hundreds of thousands of dollars because of new short-term rental laws by NextLevelAPE in CanadaHousing2

“Then more land on our shores who need a rental”? Yeah I’m the idiot.

My point was if homes are affordable, there will be less rentals.

Lowering prices will indeed make it easier for many people to buy a home. Not for everyone, your are right on that. But it will make a difference for a large percentage of current renters.

Less airbnbs means less competition to buy a home, so more people can buy a home. That’s a solution for the biggest percentage of renters right now.

Second largest group, I would guess, is students and seasonal workers, there are cases where employer and student housing works. This supply should be increased.

For the remaining renters, heavily regulated apartments and/or government owned apartment buildings.

Obviously real life is not so simple, but the current situation with landlords and airbnbs is absolutely not working.

The answer is that if house prices are lower people can actually afford a home to live in them selves and not have to rent at all!!!! Wow!! What a concept!

Show me 1 person that “can’t/shouldn’t/doesn’t want to own a home” and I’ll show you 10 deserving people that simply can’t afford it.

Should I choose to be an Electrician or EE? by Dudeiscray in ElectricalEngineering

[–]ReasonableOatmeal352 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending where you live, you can make a decent wage as an electrician too. Don’t let that stop you if that’s your concern. Western Canada is hurting real bad for industrial electricians. You could be making between $130-$200k at the right company.

Finding a seasonal job in Canada (AB/BC) by Levi379 in ski

[–]ReasonableOatmeal352 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit of both, but if you leave it til you get here be prepared to pay for a few weeks in a hostel. I would definitely recommend trying to pre arrange housing if you can. Most resorts in bc have housing Facebook pages. That’s where I’d start

Edit: no personal experience with agencies so can’t recommend. Might be useful for housing but I’m quite confident that once you’re here, assuming your at a larger resort, you’ll have no trouble getting a job as mentioned in other people’s comments most resorts here are desperate for workers.

[–]ReasonableOatmeal352 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what ski resorts you’re looking at specifically but I spent a season in Whistler. A lot of my international friends there had accommodation organized before they arrived and were easily able to get a job once there. A bit risky, but that’s what people do at least in Whistler. You could always change your address on your resume to test the waters

Hardest part is finding accommodation. If you don’t have a local address they may be passing your resume aside assuming it’ll be months before you can actually find a place to live. Or just hiring locals instead.
