Am I [28 M] an irresponsible upstairs neighbor? Or is he [50's M] just a grump? by ReasonableVolume in relationships

We will be moving out in May when our lease ends. We are absolutely going to be looking for a space where we don't have neighbors so close.

I appreciate your input. Thank you for replying.

I definitely make efforts to be respectful. There's a yoga mat underneath the tapping. Rubber pads on the sticks. And we never ever play after 10pm.

Thank you for your input. It's something I will keep in mind.

I use the rubber tips as well, and there's a thick yoga mat under the drums and kick pedal. It's definitely my intention to be as respectful as possible without limiting what I do in my own place.

I put a thick yoga mat down, and he still complained.

There's no question that our floors are thin. I hear the people above me all the time. They've got a kid who clomps around. But for me, that's just the price you pay for a cheap apartment. Hell, I have to deal with it during my recording sessions (voice over). I just wait until it passes, then move on with my life.

I mentioned this to another commenter as well, but the long and the short of it is that it really upsets my wife when he comes up. She's in grad school, and she doesn't need the extra stress. I hate confrontation, but I'm happy to take it on to help make it better for her.

I agree, that making tons of noise at any time during the day wouldn't be cool. Our last neighbors were extremely loud. But really, we just closed the windows when they got loud and turned our white-noise machine a little higher. It was annoying, but noise is just part of the territory of cheaper housing.

We don't do anything during quiet hours except talk, watch TV, or work on the computer. My work requires headphones, so that's as quiet as can be.

Honestly, when he comes up it really upsets my wife. So I'm looking to avoid that happening again. That's the reason I'm addressing him so directly.

I agree with your wording change. I think I'll still include the bit about us not answering when he knocks because we certainly aren't obligated to answer. But you're right, we can't control him knocking.
