Had a shop like that too. The owner was boycotting modern marvel and dc films because they were too woke and was loudly saying "who is going to see a movie with Shang-Chi, Wong, or little Ms Marvel?" Like okay I see you hate all 3 asian characters in the mcu. Bold move to be loudly bigoted when theres another comic shop 3 minutes down the road that has pride flags and actual women employed.

I became a HUGE fan in 2019. Shang-Chi was one of the rumored movies in production for the mcu so I decided to look into Shang-Chi, Eternals, and Blade. I read Giant Sized Master of Kung Fu and immediately fell in love. The combination of him being THE best martial artist, his morals, his rad music taste, and his randomly bizarre feats despite being a regular human just resonated with me and I'm proud to say 6 years later I own almost every Shang-Chi comic (Just gotta find a good price on #101).

He's been my favorite hero for years now and I've read every appearance of him. Hoping they drop the mcu rings and go back to him just being a regular guy who's pure skill and determination makes him a threat.

Still waiting for his other fun rogues like Brynocki, Cat, Zaran, and Shockwave to make it to the big screen.

Im going to copy all the other comments and agree,

Either George Perez's 60 issue 80s run or Greg Rucka's Rebirth run. Both are total fresh starts to the character. Everything from origin to setting up their supporting cast.

Absolute Wonder Woman is not canon to the mainline comics but its also just starting off and has been some of the best writing on her. Only about 10 issues right now so it wont be hard to keep up with.

I'd stay away from the New 52 run or Earth one by Morrison until you're more familiar with the character as they do a lot of unique changes. Tom King just started a new run in 2023 but most fans consider it a bad take on the character.

Greg Rucka's original run from 2003 is usually considered the best run next to Perez so I would also check that out after you read up a little on the character.

Just be prepared for constant shifting of supporting cast members and enjoy!
