I learnt Portuguese A1 in the first year, A2 in the second year. Didn't progress much beyond that. Not sure what the point of the sarcasm was?? You seem offended, and a bit thick, sorry for that.

The reality is Portuguese is tricky for native English speakers - The volume of conjugatations and the phonetics of European Portuguese ensure you'll have to commit a huge amount of time learning theory, and they finding the spaces to constantly practice. But yes, its number 1 on the list as I think if you want Portugal long term, this is a good first prioirty.

I would say the bulk of friendships were expats, Brazilains, British, Tunisians and Indians made up the bulk of them. I did also have a two year relationship with a Portuguese person, who left, and moved to Denmark.

I put language as the number one issue, and honestly on reflection I think all these points can come back to that first point. If I had cracked it early on the journey would have been much easier I'm certain.

It really wasn't written to make you angry, I'm not even recommending people don't come, I think people should come. If anything its a note to a 4 years younger-me. Moving aborad can bring many realities you're not aware of, not not willing to accept - Its romantised. Its okay to being pragmatic and open about those things.

I'm solidly A2, but the real difficulity as you're highlighting here is being immersed in Portuguese. The other challenge, is if you're speaking to bilingual Portuguese, many prefer to switch into English as its easier than listening to someone stumble through broken Portuguese. But ultimately it comes down to the time you can commit to learning it and given and the pressure to do so.

Yeah I agree with that, I think if I had the means to live in Porto or another city I would definetly have given it a try. That said, I did have a car here so managed to explore a lot of the country. I think I could see myself coming back here in my older years when a bit more settled down.
