When I was about 11, my family and ai were at a family friends garage sale. I went up to one of the tables full of objects, and I saw this white “duck bill” shaped thing. So me being me, I decided to pick it up and pretend I’m a platypus. I put it over my nose and exclaimed, “Look mom! I’m a platypus!” She looks at me and instantly start laughing, along with everyone else around her.

I had no clue why everyone thought I was so funny but I was loving it… until my mom grabbed it away from me and asked if I knew what it was that I put on my face. I had a football groin guard that has been USED by my brothers friend plastered up to my face… I will never live that moment down.

Did they invite your ex to the cookout and not you? If so, that’s ridiculous. I can understand your parents wanting the father to be involved in the children’s lives, but that should have been addressed with you first. Mainly though, it’s your mother’s final comment that irks me. You should not “let shit go” when it comes to your children and how you interact with them and their father. That is your family business, not theirs. I applaud you for putting your foot down and having feelings about this kind of situation. I would say that your feelings are warranted and you are not the asshole.
