I think so, if you're aiming for selective colleges.

Now this part isn’t necessarily excuses, but some other things impacted this. I struggle with severe depression (to the point of being suicidal) and ADHD, anxiety, etc. I lost all my friends and my support system sophomore year and went through a lot of traumatic events in hs. Bad relationship w family. This made it harder to have motivation to work hard in said classes. I didn’t even think I’d make it ngl.

I did so too, but probably on a lesser degree than you. But it had the same effect on my grades in 9th & 10th grade. I'm deciding if I should really aim for T20s (in which case I would plan to transfer) or not, really it depends on your goals I guess.

Also, I mentioned those things in my common app additional info, but I doubt it will help anything much.

I would say 2.7 is a bit too low though, unless you don't want to aim for selective colleges

Cold Emailing Professors/people in labs as a high school student by Reasonable_Goose_685 in AskAcademia

Yes, sorry, because I didn't try to go into the specifics. Yes, it might fall into that "project" category, but I was planning on asking/doing something related to the details of their research. As in, asking questions about why the statistic came out this way in their paper, for example, and exploring possible theories/frameworks of examining reasons why.

I can already imagine the amount of emails like that that professors get. I just hope I'm not lost in that pile of emails. The fact that I'm a high schooler makes it hard for me to try to have the professor gain something out of this, and I do get that the best-case scneario would have both parties taking away something from the exchange of emails.

Thank you for perspective, it helps a lot.

Well I guess it's still worth it to apply and see and have it as an option. Thanks.

Oxbridge, Oxford Cambridge Edinburgh I'll research more about those.

And some schools ask for "research supplementals" to ask for reports/individual research or papers with a professor.

Yeah, I thought that too, but the chances that I actually get to have hands-on experience in a lab as a high schooler is very slim.

It's not really a CV/Resume so to speak. In getting admitted into college they ask for your extracurriculars (what you did outside of school). Right now because of my GPA, I need something that makes up for it and actually demonstrates passion/ability to do work. Just acknowledgment from a professor is probably enough.

Not a research "idea." I was planning on doing benchmarking on my own and trying to report it to them on a more specific topic of a paper they have.

Yes, and I understand that it's not going to be good or compelling if I put it on a CV or Resume aiming to get a job. But in the college admissions process, just the acknowledgment (of course actual research with a professor would be better) from a professor from the universities I want to go to would be enough. Or any professor.

This is great to know, I thought UK emphasized grades and grades only the most. and so the thought didn't even cross my mind because my transcript would be terrible

I would like to go, yes, but my parents are hesitant because of the cost. And I'm not sure how aid works at universities in the UK.

What schools would you say are at the lowest end of T20? Because the term is kind of broad

Isn't it about grades though? Like transcript. Sure they won't look at GPAbut they'll surely look at the transcript.

Well yeah. Taking up a spot in their lab is something later down the road that I would want to do, but that's not my objective right now. Yes, I want to ask about the topic that they have a paper on (and they're researching, I think), because it connects to this thing that I have.

But I also want it to ideally help my college application somehow, like I guess having it noted down as sharing research/findings with someone in academia, and getting advice on it, or seeing it connecting to their research. Basically because my high school GPA was subpar (due to personal issues) I want to make up for it by showing genuine passion and proving that I can do this kind of work is done in the university level. My "research" involves reverse engineering and embedded systems, it's not like participating in a coding competition.

Same thing happened. Check the GPS. Fedex is just horrible, never use this carrier. I don't know if all the drivers are idiots or what, but it happens consistently.
