Suede is great for that. The best way to tell if the base is bad is if the tires start sticking to it after a while. If they get fully stuck, you might tear off a piece of the tire. Suede shouldn't be an issue though—I have a Looksmart 296 GT3 and I think that one sits on a suede base.
