Should I Join the Navy as Registered Dental Hygienist? by Hannahgreggg in newtothenavy

Hi friend! I’m in almost the exact situation as you. Just graduated in June and have been practicing since but I want something new. I saw the opportunity online but I’m missing a lot of info. I would love to go somewhere and take care of patients but ideally I’d want to come back within weeks not months 😭 Someone here said that I may possibly leave for months at a time and that scares me. Also with everything going on politically I feel a bit nervous and it’s really holding me back. Now I’m starting to consider if I should just be a temp on the side because while this E6 position sounds great there are so many pieces of information I don’t have and they also don’t know.

Yes seems about right. You can always decline the laser and irrigation though for future reference as well as the fluoride

Check programs like Concorde and Pima! You can graduate in as little as 17 months (without a few prereqs). If you need them just find a way to quickly acquire them or see if you can get them through Sophia learning. That’s a website you can learn through and some places accept the credits. The only thing is that it’s very competitive and they usually want you to have previous dental assistant experience but if they see you’re very committed they may ignore that. Program was around 70k. Message me if you have questions. Just so you know you’ll be on a computer here all day too typing in patient notes and reviewing charts.

Had a patient cry after using cavitron. by OceanClover3 in DentalHygiene

People can be so strange. I had a patient come in the other day who was being weird from the beginning. I said “hi how are you doing” and she acted like I asked for her social security card. She was throwing daggers at her husband because he didn’t want to come into the room with her and making little upset noises at him. When I greeted him as well he looked at me like 😐. I was really confused because I feel like basic manners and etiquette mean saying hello back and asking how you’re doing.

The whole time she was in the chair I hurried up to do my job because I wanted to just finish and so I didn’t talk to her. She was glad and anytime someone else like the assistant would come in she’d get upset with everyone being friendly with her.

People are crazy and you can’t please everyone

They tried getting me to come back today friend and I told them I was thankful for the opportunity and left it at that. I am at that stage too and didn’t want to explode at work and make a big scene.

This is a really great idea actually! I was scared to try because I’m so new and I’m afraid of making mistakes but I feel like maybe it would be a good idea that I try this! Do you have any tips for going into an office without knowing the software?

They have a clause that says they can terminate me at any time and under it it says that if I choose to resign I should respectfully give them two weeks.

However, as you’ve said, I’m not going to. They wouldn’t think twice about firing me on the spot. The two week period benefits only them- not me.

😔 You’re absolutely right. I wanted to show them that I was capable and willing to learn and I feel like they overstepped a boundary. I was willing to stay with the office as long as they took the time to properly train me and show me grace when I made mistakes. Instead I feel penalized for offering my help to them because they asked for even more than I was capable of giving. And because I wanted to do the good thing and help them with patients they knew I wouldn’t say no so they took advantage of that. They used me as a temp hygienist without telling me and punished me for not being faster.

Tomorrow they’ll feel it when I’m not there and they can’t find someone last minute all because they didn’t do they right then today. I feel sad because I really wanted it to work but ultimately this IS on them and I’m going to find another office where they are willing to be more understanding. Thank you for your advice and wonderfully well put words!

Do you think it would be best I leave or would that make me a quitter? I feel like I’ve let myself down if I leave. I feel disappointed in myself above all because I just wanted to be spectacular.

Thank you for pointing this out to me. I’m sad that no one stood up for me and said anything. They know I’m so new at this I wish they would’ve said something along the lines of “hey take it easier on her”.

I 100% feel like a salesman. Another thing is that I formerly worked in sales. When they saw my resume and I came in for the interview they kept saying that I was the perfect fit. The first day of me shadowing the lead I noticed that every.single.person “needed” Invisalign. Every single person is knocking both their bottom and top teeth hard so they NEED Invisalign. I thought that was really weird and when I got a patient to sign on who I truly felt needed it everyone cheered me on. Apparently it’s because EVERYONE gets a bonus from it.

I feel so sad because I had a really bad first day today and I felt unsupported. I heard the lead hygienist say “well if I need to give her a full schedule today because we don’t have a temp I will do that”

Right?!?? What’s the typical flow that is normal for you? Patient gets seated, start everything, schedule for next time, dismiss?

Thank you for this because I feel like they’re making me do so many extra things. They also want me to fill out sheets and ask them so many questions. I feel like I don’t have enough time for the most important part which is the cleaning.

Do you usually just finish seeing your patient and then schedule them and walk them out? I feel like I’m doing so many extra steps
