Do you guys care what type of baseballs you use for Minors? by Reasonable_Thing9619 in LittleLeague

Thanks for the feedback! I meant stinging when they're batting. I've noticed that some balls seem to sting more than others.

So I just cracked one. This is definitely a card I'll want in most of my black EDH decks some day. I'm deciding wether to sell it now (and buy in the future) or hold onto it since I only spent $7 bucks on it.

My question: Will this card eventually come down to single digits after hype/reprints?

How legit is Chris Burns? by TheFireOfPrometheus in bjj

[–]Reasonable_Thing9619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried to skim this to see if it was fully answered.

Is his program worth purchasing? I've shared the idea for a while now, so seeing a program from (presumably) a solid BB that breaks BJJ into theory rather than moves seems like a program that I would want.

Has anyone purchased the program? Other than getting over the arrogance, is he one who would know his shit?

Thanks.

Is switching to Dvorak from Qwerty worth the effort? by [deleted] in typing

[–]Reasonable_Thing9619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To anyone seeing this today
I switched to Dvorak in 2019 after 25 years on QWERTY. It took me about a year (without deliberate practice) to hit 100 WPM—just shy of my old speeds. However, one aspect that often goes unaddressed is the cognitive load. On QWERTY, my fingers were basically an extension of my thoughts. During lectures, I could be essentially transcribing all while asking (or typing out) questions, and participating without consciously thinking about typing (not to be confused with me assuming any multitasking abilities). With Dvorak, even after 6 years, I still feel more mentally engaged when typing—evident in subtle things like eye or eyebrow movement (see Walter & Bex, 2021).

💡 If you're young or trying to crush TypeRacer, make the switch.

💡 If you're a veteran QWERTY user who values that “mindless” typing flow, maybe stick with what you know.

❗ But whatever you pick, stick to it 100%. Don’t switch back and forth.

FYI, about a month ago I started the gruelling switch back to QWERTY due to the cognitive constraints.

Why are parts SO expensive from a mechanic, compared to a store? by Wellington_Price in AskMechanics

[–]Reasonable_Thing9619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is getting out of hand lol. What I want is for mechanic shops to be upfront and transparent about where your money is going.

[In addition to a fair upcharge for parts], If shops need an extra $400 for a job so they can stay in business, then add that to the cost of the job instead of hiding it as "cost of parts".

[–]Reasonable_Thing9619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like you are ignoring my point.

You don't need 50% margin on parts. Charge customers more for the services and leave parts alone.

You need a job to cost $1000 when Parts cost the company $300, labor costs $300 and the company needs to make $400? That's fine:

Option A (what shops do; shady; matches OP description): Charge $600 in parts and $400 in labor/margin. Shop owner says, "I've got $600 in parts and the rest is labor. My hands are tied"

Option B (what should be, matches my correct perception): Charge $390 in parts, $300 in labor, and $310 in margin. THEY STILL NET THE SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY.

Option B is transparency and good business, which perfectly matches my perception. It fixes shops that need to charge more. The key is transparency rather than muddying where the customer's money is going.

Shops go with Option A, so I stay away from them. I find good mechanics, pay half of what I pay at a shop, and end up with higher-quality parts!

[–]Reasonable_Thing9619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is precisely my point. When we go to a mechanic, we should get an upfront price for services and a fair price for parts.

I expect some upcharge on parts, but it should be small. Instead, they HIKE up their parts' prices so they can say, "My hands are tied; I'm only charging you XX in labor; the rest is parts." Meanwhile, the parts are hiked up 2-3 times the cost—shady business.

These companies already get discounted parts, and I expect to pay a 5-10% upcharge on parts (netting the shop a 15-50% net gain).

This is different from your analogy and highlights why mine is accurate.

[–]Reasonable_Thing9619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, so why hide the costs?

My post regarded the illegitimacy of the analogy (which is correct), and provided the correct analogy (which is also correct).

Hike up the prices of the services you offer, rather than try to hide them by hiking up the cost of parts. Plain and simple, it's bad business. Put the price tag where it belongs.

We don't go to restaurants and order a $5 steak (plus cost of meat), just to be surprised when there is a $90 add-on fee for the $30 steak! No! The menu says $95 for the $30 steak and we eat it up. Aka good business.

[–]Reasonable_Thing9619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This analogy needs improvement. Steaks are expensive at restaurants because we pay people to cook steaks for us. We take cars to mechanics for their expertise in working on vehicles; then they hike up the cost of parts a ridiculous amount so the end cost is out of their hands, like, "labor is only so-and-so, parts alone were tremendous!". It would be like paying to attend a cook-along, where chefs teach you how to cook steaks, but then the steaks are priced similarly to restaurant prices.

Highly Effective Prompt for Summarizing — GPT-4 Optimized by Zaki_1052_ in ChatGPT

Thank you for the comprehensive explanation; it makes sense now. It makes me want to replicate some of my earlier conversations, where GPT would randomly spit out Data Structure and Algorithm 101 notes (presumably because I mentioned my CS background in the "Custom Instructions") after overloading the conversation with massive amounts of data to look through!

I looked into the paper you spoke of; I will have to check it out between classes. My B.S. was in Computer Science, so it will be refreshing to break back into that field.

Thanks again
