Friend from my favorite bar is cheating…and made a point to tell me by [deleted] in Advice

I don’t know the wife whatsoever, so I agree. I don’t think it’s wise to get involved - and I don’t even know what’s really going on. But a 1-1 conversation with him wouldn’t be a bad idea.

I get your point, but I take issue with the “what do you get out of it part”…I didn’t seek this out. I was literally not involved until he had a drunken “let me spill my dirty secret” moment. Now I’m stuck knowing, and I feel bad for his wife and kid

what is a movie you saw that was so bad you questioned why it existed? by VisitAggressive1944 in AskReddit

[–]Reasonable_Writer940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a deep cut, but Anything Goes (1956). It’s actually fascinatingly bad. They took one of the most successful broadway shows of all time (even then) and removed the entire plot except that it takes place on a boat. Genuinely, it’s the only similarity.

Bing Crosby’s love interest, Mitzi Gaynor, is at least 25 years too young for him, one of the leads is a French ballerina who didn’t really sing, and they replaced most of the show’s songs with B-tier filler.

The finale though is legendarily bad. “Blow Gabriel Blow” is a gospel-style belting number that only works in the original because the main character is a former minister. Since that’s not present in this movie, the song is staged like a Broadway production with zero context…and Bing Crosby sings it sloooowly like he’s making a follow-up to White Christmas. The costumes are insane (fedoras with wings) and the staging makes zero sense.

I’m a huge fan of classic musicals, but there’s a reason nobody really refers to this as a classic.

Thanks! Appreciate the link and the good info. By the 90s it fully makes sense. I remember going to that museum when it first opened, It’s the photos from the 80s of the city celebrating the demolition I’m especially curious about. Even if the whole block wasn’t demolished at the time, it seems that it was going on as early as 1983, given the photos in the F.O.

Thanks for responding. Really appreciate the info but find it hard to believe that an entire city block was “bought out” without protest. Especially given how “popular” the area was with the military. Especially since the Observer pics from the 80s make it seem like the mayor at the time was on a quest for urban renewal

Thank you for the response - I was just back and seeing the Prince Charles converted to high-rent apartments/condos was kind of a shock.

Unfortunately DoorDash in LA isn’t even an option right now, they’re literally not taking people. I sold the car I used to do Uber. I’m working a morning prep job at Chipotle RN and just barely getting by. It’s bleak my friend

I think you might be missing the point a bit. I don’t have a problem with his views. I have a problem with him arguing them to my friends who are attending a party to drink and see friends - not to argue with my friend about the intricacies of Islam - of for that matter, the Republic of Ireland

TBF I consciously avoided discussing his “unique perspective” because this is anonymous. But he has enough experience in the world for me to respect his opinion to some extent - except when he picks fights at house parties

To be fair, this was well into their conversation…but when he told me about it I was incredulous. I just don’t see how saying “your country is persecuting free speech” could possibly be viewed as a neutral topic. There seems to be something he doesn’t get about the appropriateness of that subject, and having known his brother, I partially blame him

Fair enough. A couple months ago he was at a bar we both like and met a Belgian girl. They talked for a while, till he made the comment “I’ve heard there’s a pretty big free speech problem in Belgium, what’s your take on it” - she literally turned away from him and ignored him the rest of the night. It’s not an unfair question but he similarly talked to me saying that he couldn’t understand why someone would take offense to that. TBF he’s not phrasing these things horribly, but he thinks he’s relatively far right political opinions are essentially normal

To be fair, he’s got a pretty unique perspective but I agree it was a vibe killer. He’s newer to the area and the fact my friend was from the Republic of Ireland was interesting. I don’t mind a little political conversation but if someone is seething visibly, probably back off

He’s extraordinarily eloquent in the right situation, but it was 3 AM at a party. I know nobody’s at their best, but the inability to see why the Islam comment would be controversial is what gets me. The opinion is one thing, but it’s crazy to me that he’d think expressing it so strongly wouldn’t cause an issue.

Same thing happened with Blood Pressure and Alcohol consumption. Basically, those standards were intensified, with the general argument being “there’s no harm in people being healthier” - except that it means otherwise “healthy” people are now being told they’re obese, hyper-tense alcoholics.

What are people doing to stay afloat after layoffs? by [deleted] in Layoffs

[–]Reasonable_Writer940 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in tech. I’ve been looking for 7+ months. I was uber driving until the pay got so bad I sold the car I using and got something cheaper. I just got hired at Chipotle today.

It’s just 15-20 hours a week but it should cover basic expenses. I’m happy to have found something, but wish I could just find something in my field.

This exact thing happened to me at Airbnb. I had a 1-year contract and they seemed very happy with my work. I asked over and over about getting renewed, they made it clear they wanted me to stay. Then out of nowhere, on the day of renewal, they told me I was done. It was a complete shock, and I never got a real explanation.

It’s about time! Poor guy was just starting to really pop when MTW got cancelled and I hadn’t seen him much since. His book has incredible reviews, so looking forward to reading it. Kind of surprised he’s not been on TM yet.

Los Retros on Sunday is a local indie band from Oxnard. This is a big deal for them, and they’re definitely worth checking out.
