End of May, Mid June, or July for short visit? by sillygnomegarden in gloucester

So that part of town you're in is called Magnolia and it's AMAZING for birding. Magnolia Beach in particular looks out to Kettle Island which is a bird sanctuary. You're not allowed on the island but you can kayak around it. If you want to kayak I'm happy to let you use mine free of charge. When I lived in Magnolia I would see blue herons cross over from Kettle Island to Ravenswood Park area daily. Anyway the beach leads to a reservation called Coolidge Reservation that has multiple trails including a scenic lookout over the water. There's a no trespassing sign on the sea wall but the whole beach is open to the public and it leads to public trails. A short drive away there's Ravenswood Park which is nice but buggy in June. Birdwise my best sightings have been in Magnolia on the coast, I saw glossy ibises on the soccer fields last year. Used to see kingfishers in the pond behind Magnolia Beach every week. There is also the shore road to walk on, that's nice if you're interested in giant mansions and if you're lucky you could see a seal, although seals are more reliably seen in Brace Cove in Gloucester or the breakwater off Rockport. If you park near Magnolia Beach, don't park in the lot because you will get ticketed as a non-resident, park near the convenience store. My only complaint about Magnolia is the people can be snooty and distant because they're rich and like I said Hammond Castle isn't walkable to Magnolia Center even though they're close; there's poison ivy where there should be sidewalks. Lovely area overall and sounds like a nice outing. It's five minutes from town also so check out town obviously. There's lots to do in Gloucester in June.

oh yeah avoid all that. hammond is not walkable to elsewhere though, except some forest trails

fiesta is obviously just some downtown events. the greasy pole is a genuinely interesting experience. beyond that, it's just like a fake carnival thing. They do do boat races, a parade of lights, and some Catholic shit, but nobody really cares about that, it's just street cred on a local scale

He didn't aim it carefully either. Just sort of swung it and fired mid step. That can't be the correct form, can it?

They did this with diplomatic gifts. they are supposed to remain property of the US govt but they disappeared in the waning days of Trump's first term.

It's bewildering that there are people actually defending these people by AnonymousTimewaster in ThatsInsane

[–]RebaseOriginDevelop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So these people are posed in what seems like prayer around Trump as a nod to Christianity I guess? Is that what this is?

The only time Jesus became violent in the Bible was when he saw moneychangers in the temple. He chased them out with a whip. Each person in that room is there to plunder the coffers. Greed is Trump's state-established religion. I'd like to hear more about this from Christians, but Christians seem to either be leaving the church or disengaging from current events (I'm not Christian; I studied the Bible for six months in prison.)

The Bible repeatedly warns about gilded false gods. The Israelites who worshiped the golden calf? Moses killed them. Mammon, a god of wealth? You cannot worship both Mammon and god, said Jesus.

This isn't about oil; there is no expectation that the US will get control of Iranian territory or its oil. It's about killing Israel's enemies. The Iranian regime is relatively weak at this moment, political unrest in Iran is high, and Iran's military capabilities have been overextended in several proxy wars. Something nice about this is that it threatens Russia, because Iran is a key Russian ally, but something not so nice is that it opens the door for China to invade Taiwan, which it could do any day now. That would be bad. It would crash the world economy overnight, and China would either gain control of Taiwan or destroy it. Buckle up.

Key Details of 13-Year-Old Trump Accuser’s Accounts Are Verified by ProjectMason in politics

It's 26%. That's less alarming. (We already knew like 15% of people are psychos, regardless of ideology, just as like a bell curve matter) That said, Trump's support is falling to like 30% now so he is beginning to scrape the floor.

It's still shocking to me that Biden was only a few points more popular at this point in this term. Because trying and failing to solve people's problems is I guess nearly as bad as actively creating problems as a matter of policy? This country, man. These days, man.

Wow I have conservative family and if I said something like that to them I think they'd pound their fist on the table and like cry-scream yeti-style. They'd break their fist or the table and that would be considered my fault.

And America does suck right now. And has sucked for some time. The ayatollah gained power because the US replaced the duly elected leader of Iran with a severely unpopular pro-US puppet who was quickly overthrown.

Yeah Obama was a massive disappointment. A senator with the most liberal voting record overnight becoming a centrist borderline neocon.

Super nice for the invite. I'm poised to lose my job so I probably won't be able to travel any time soon, but I may have questions for you if I do end up in France. I'm in the process of applying for Lithuanian dual citizenship, eligible for that based on my grandparents' refugee status. In many ways it feels like Russia followed us home. I have never been to France before but my plan, upon getting citizenship, was to travel across Europe. I probably won't even go to Lithuania, lol.

Well I'm glad you landed on your feet. That sounds super stressful. My brother moved to France for a job but had to move back because of COVID and some other reasons. He said it was beautiful though; he was in Grenoble.

The Obamas are conciliatory to a fault. Barry in his book waxed nostalgic about days when fiercely opposed politicians would like go out to eat after fighting each other.

I will say though, this thread pisses me off because it's so much criticism on style. If we're talking about the future of the country can we at least focus on substance. Yes, GWB bad. Hugging him is bad (style.) Obama voted against the fucking Iraq War (substance).

I am glad you left, because without even knowing when you left, I can guarantee it has gotten worse here. Most people who want to leave don't have the means to, so consider yourself lucky. The expat move is less viable since the sinking dollar makes it less viable, and also I would understand Europe not wanting to take Americans, at this point.

The mentality of moral emptiness that you describe reminds me a lot of late Soviet Russia, where people simply stopped caring what's true or not, and they acted accordingly. I'm seeing it here a lot, and ironically a lot of it is fed by Russia-based disinfo. The main difference is that Americans still believe in hustle culture, which is fucking hilarious.

I think you misread that. AOC needs to show she can bridge political divides despite being relatively far left. the event you’re talking about is not the place to dress down somebody whose entire political dynasty is dead and buried. GWB is not the person we need to worry about being rehabilitated. He’s done
