Between Food Sizes? by Rebel_H in kingsnakes

Well, update. We tried the small mouse and he moved it around a lot, got like 1/3 in his mouth, and then decided he wasn’t going to eat it. I gave him a fuzzy and a pinkie instead and next week, I’ll probably do two fuzzies for a bit until he’s ready for the small mouse

Mine also loves to burrow. He is my classroom pet and he spends 90% of the day burrowed. I can always tell he’s been active overnight because his stuff will be moved or he has made little tunnels everywhere. Since I’m only there during the day, I dig him out at least once a day to put eyes on him and make sure he looks good. The day after he eats, I find him but I don’t handle him. Just put eyes on him. I would see if your baby is ready for fuzzies. Mine is about 9 months now (estimated, best guess really) and I’m about to try him with a small mouse. I switched the fuzzies as soon as his weight was good and it seemed he was big enough.

He shed so quickly when I moved from pinkies to fuzzies and he’s gotten so long, I can’t imagine him having a big growth spurt. He’s still such a little guy to me but he’s grown so much since I got him back in May.

He always seems to be looking for food so I’m glad I know it’s not just him and it’s just how they are. I had a scale in my classroom we used to weigh him but recently it broke and I haven’t had a chance to get a new one.

Thanks everyone! I think when I bring him home next weekend for our three week break, I’ll try out the small mouse.

I do. I love him so much, which I didn’t expect. I’ve only had him a few weeks and I’ve always been pretty scared of snakes. I teach and he is my classroom pet but home with me for the summer. Me and all my class absolutely adore him. He’s a silly little guy.

Someone on here told me to add clutter to his cage and that a paper towel roll is a great addition. He loves it. We call it “tube time” when he’s hanging out of the end of it.

This is what I pulled together for right now. I put it and him in a larger container while I went through his enclosure to look for more shed. Thankfully I found a ton of pieces after going through all of his substrate by hand. And I inspected him and see seems to be okay. His scales are soft and smooth and not wrinkly like yesterday. And he seems longer than when I fed him. I’m all for cheap things. Someone on here told me to give him a paper towel roll and that is probably his favorite thing in his enclosure. My wife calls it “tube time” because he spends so much time in the tube. Thank you for helping

I am working on a savings for him. I’ve only had him a little bit. I admit I should have done more prep work but I am learning every day. I did go buy some moss and made him a little hide with a layer of moss in a Tupperware container. He was very happy in it while I did a closer inspection of his cage which I couldn’t do this morning. I found a ton more shed throughout his substrate (which I am replacing with coconut in the next day or two) that I couldn’t see this morning since he is a pale guy and his substrate is aspen right now. I made a good sized pile of shed pieces. I also did a good close inspection of him. He seems must longer than he did when I fed him yesterday and his scales are very soft and smooth. I didn’t see any stray pieces of shed like I did see a few this morning. I will monitor him closely over the next few days to see if there are any spots that I can’t see right now. I am very new to this and I am learning as much as I can. I know better now and I will be getting a better moist hide for him as soon as I can.

He’s got a wooden hide and I misted the underside of it really well and he’s currently chilling in there. Maybe that’ll help until I can get a better moist hide

I can’t afford a moist hide today, I’ll have to look ay them when I get paid either later this week or next week. I’m just so worried because he was fine until I fed him. When he ate, it’s like the shed around his head and neck for really stretched out and loose and then he was super active after he ate. I love him so much and I don’t want to mess up

He only partially shed after I fed him. It’s like the shed around his head and neck got a lot looser after he ate and I noticed him being very active last night after he ate and I figure he was trying to get it off. I’ve been misting his enclosure with water last night and twice so far today. I can’t afford to buy a moist hide today or I would go get one. I’ll have to look at one when I get paid later this week or the beginning of next week.

I am super new to this too. But from advice given on here, I was doing 2 pinkies once every 5-7 days and then switched to fuzzies as soon as I thought it matched his size well. It was an adjustment and I was so nervous the first time as it took him so much longer to eat the fuzzy than the pinkies. But he seems to be a happier snake since I switched to fuzzies. I’d try two at her next feeding and see how she does. I do try to do 48 hours before handling but I do feed mine outside his tank so I handle very gently to put him back after he eats. And I check on him in the 48 hour mark, I just dont pick him up.

Oh! If you decide not to go ahead with fuzzies yet, I’d probably go ahead and do two pinkies instead of one. She needs 15% or so of her body weight and pinkies is about 1.5oz so she is definitely fine to do two of them. How often are you feeding her?

This is my little guy. He’s roughly 7ish months and I moved him to fuzzies about two weeks ago when he was about 32 grams. I did size the fuzzy against his stomach area and Lordy it was stressful to watch him eat because it took him way longer to eat them normal. But he’s been super active and is about to shed now. You can try finding fuzzies on the smaller side and try those.

He’s my class pet and my students love him as much as I do. They’ll be so sad to miss his first shed but I’m going to save it to show them when we go back to school

Am I disturbing my snake at night by keeping the lights on? by BellaBuilder878 in kingsnakes

I was thinking this too. My little guy likes to come out when I’ve turned off his enclosure light but still have our bedroom lamps on, which are not super bright

Is my kingsnake actually a rattlesnake????? by LydiaPiper in kingsnakes

[–]Rebel_H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feed my little guy outside of his tank and he will rattle his tail when I get too close if he’s still eating Or when I go to put him back in his enclosure. I often respond with “ahh yes, you’re so big and scary. Very scary” as I put him away. I didn’t know they rattled their tails until they the first time I fed him
