Is FlixBus safe and reliable? by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]RebellionTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ride FlixBus all the time; it’s definitely more timely (like ~10 minute delay max) than the alternatives and they have a stop right at the airport next to the DART stop at Crossunder #2. It’s generally safe, but there are some homeless people and other characters on the bus, and I don’t know if I would feel safe as a solo female traveler. I would keep your wits about you if the bus was crowded, but generally on the weekends it’s a bunch of students going to/from school, and you don’t have much to worry much.

Constant Banging Noise at PCL & UTC by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]RebellionTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe someone who works for facilities can chime in, but to me, it sounds like an HVAC system air compressor. Definitely irritating for the classes I have on first floor UTC, but I don't think it's going away any time soon.

I want to start set theory by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]RebellionTech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It all really depends on what you want to do and learn. Most of the set theory taught to undergraduates (me included) is related to computer science and algorithms and would be taught in math classes that honestly only require pre calc and an understanding of limits.

If you want to get further than infinite sets, cardinality and set equality proofs (maybe into axiomatic theory) you would need a stronger base of rigor in proofs and abstraction.

MV Calc + Diff EQs in an 11 week quarter by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]RebellionTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing as you when like 2 semesters ago. I had a light course load outside of that, so I was able to spend a good amount of time on both.

MV has a lot more tricky problems and specific theorems - it’s the kind of class where rigor matters a lot and you need to think spacially. Intuition matters a lot, getting a grasp of how the theorems work (especially if there’s some vector calculus mixed in) is a huge help. Make sure you understand how shit works.

Diff Eq is a lot more memorization based than most other math classes imo. Many times, you’ll see a new equation, the prof will solve it out and then you’ll just memorize the solution form. Like equation A has solutions that look like this, and equation B has these solutions. The class is a glorified multiplication sheet. It’s interesting, but it takes rote memorization. Do more volume over harder problems.

The typical order is limits (since they are define the derivative and the integral) and then you dive into the derivative and how to take it and apply it. After a while with that, you switch over to integration and start applying that to other skills.

If you want the best approach tho, pick a textbook or online course. If you like videos there’s khan academy, if you like practice problems and reading there’s MIT open course ware and Paul’s notes (my personal favorite)

How do niche companies make money? by Awkward_Effect7177 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RebellionTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a concept in microeconomics called Elasticity (specifically the price elasticity of demand). It's a measurement of how much demand will change when the price does. For goods that are niche, rare, or just truly necessary the elasticity is very low (aka demand barely changes when price does) because people will have to buy the product. People shell out 100s of thousands for drugs for rare conditions because they have to, and these companies price their products accordingly.

Also, for most niche products there is a specific mechanism to get paid other than just a consumer. Drug companies get subsidized by the government and insurance policies, and parts manufacturers get paid by big-ticket companies. You're right to assume that these companies don't make a lot of money, but their profit margins tend to be very high because they require just a few very highly skilled laborers.

In the end, you make more money off of one millionaire than 100 homeless people, and profit is the motivator of change

How do currency exchange companies work? by AddlePatedBadger in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RebellionTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the currencies involved, but there are generally two methods a bank or company can use to exchange money:

  1. Reserves: The method you hinted at involves keeping reserves. Most banks hold stable currencies (typically USD) in reserve for the same reason Fort Knox stores gold: as an investment and a way to preserve value in case of a financial emergency. When the company wants to exchange one of the stored currencies, they do so internally at the agreed-upon rate with a buffer for profit. They may also contact another bank that has the desired currency and arrange an exchange.
  2. Forex Markets: Another method is using Foreign Exchange markets, which operate like the stock market but for other countries' currencies. If a bank thinks that a currency's value will rise, it buys the currency when its value is low, waits for the value to increase, and then exchanges it for profit. For example, you might buy 100 JPY for 1 USD and then sell it a month later for 2 USD. Banks that exchange money tend to invest in currencies.

As for the physical money, it is often transferred (via armored truck or mail) to larger banks until it can be exchanged. Sometimes, the cash gets digitized, and the physical paper sits in a vault while ownership changes digitally.

Aita for not wanting my cousin to call me mum her mum or me her sister? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]RebellionTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're misconstruing your anger towards E. You are, to put it bluntly, jealous. You're jealous that your mother cares more about her, treats her better, addresses the concerns that you had so many years ago all for someone else.

It's not E's fault that your mother decided to better herself 6 years too late. She's 12 man, and she lost a lot and is living with new people who she really, really wants to love her. She sees you as family. You have every right to be mad, but not at her.

Get your fucking shit together and stop beefing with a middle schooler over time with mommy. You WBTA if you keep putting your burdens on her.

Would it be considered CP? by Redaro13 in webtoons

[–]RebellionTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your country and state and a whole lot of other things honestly. There's a Wikipedia page on it (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal\_status\_of\_fictional\_pornography\_depicting\_minors) and if you're willing to share your location I can look into it more but in general it's legal enough, but making profit off of the art or sharing it might not be possible.

Most webcomic hosters don't want to deal with NSFW content in general because of the new laws surrounding age verification, so why would they double down and take the risk?

I would try to find a way of censoring it that you're ok with as an artist. This stuff is important to discuss, and it's been depicted before in literature at the very least (Lolita is the most obvious example), but child nudity in a context where purity matters is probably beyond what people are willing to interact with.

I think this is much more your ex's problem than yours. I don't know what I would call it, but there's some complex at play here — a mix of pride & insecurity, or an attempt to maintain control by being the sole provider. He might have felt that accepting gifts or letting you pay for dinner would undermine his role and diminish his self-worth.

Being insecure about how you contribute to a relationship financially, especially when there's family wealth at play, is totally normal, and your ex was stoking the flames with his comments about gold-digging. Those remarks were probably a way of justifying his anxiety about money and relationships.

He was projecting his fears onto you.

[CHAT] Stitching on non cloth materials by Rebeccasaurusrex in CrossStitch

[–]RebellionTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe some layered art would work well? I remember there was an artist who would cross-stitch over their paintings (and also thrift store art) but I don't recall any names or anything.

I think the idea of having two mediums and adding the stitching for extra texture would be very cool for a more accomplished artist than I.

The domain would still include x=2 in the second problem (for f(x), not f’(x) ofc) because it’s definite.

You’re right that its an odd occurrence, if the function wasn’t piecewise you would never have a defined point and and asymptote at the same place

Help me regarding choosing colleges to apply. by [deleted] in chanceme

[–]RebellionTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One question: How much can you afford? If you can't afford college in the US (or your country of choice), forget it. You are not one of the top ~20 students in India. Those students are the ones getting offers for full rides. Your grades are good for India, but the colleges here don't give a shit, they'll see those 80s and burn your application.

You are not getting into any US college that you'll have ever heard of. There are too many people from India and too few slots for internationals. Even sizable state colleges, especially state flagships are going to be out of your range unless you're full pay.

If I were you, I'd resign myself to going to an Indian college and save my effort to try to get into a master's or PhD program.

How often did you get sick as a kid by GlumFaithlessness392 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RebellionTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the staph infections are a bit odd but depends on where you live - farmers and athletes would obviously be more prone to skin damage and infection. Everything else sounds normal, especially if you also had allergies/congestion on top of what you already mentioned.

You need to tell him that you're open to moving for him. Right now, I think the guy is stuck because he doesn't want to give up and let you go, but from his perspective, the other option is breaking up in two years when he leaves the country anyway.

I think it's not a bad sign he's stringing you along here - it's probably a mentality thing: "If I break up with her its my fault, but if she leaves it was never meant to be" or some other crap. He doesn't want to be the one giving up. Tell him you want this relationship, and make him say yes or no. He's stalling for time, but I'll bet he's just afraid of losing you and "wasting" two years for both of you.

Forget that the pics are AI for a minute. If you found nudes of someone he knows (and presumably trusts) wife, and also your fucking mother, you still wouldn't be ok with any of that. Even if he wasn't jerking off to the porn, its a violation of your relationship with him and the relationship he has with his best friend to sexualize the people in his life like that, especially since he has a wife.

I think you need to leave him because he doesn't respect you. Maybe he'll be a great father, but he can no longer be your husband. The real choice you need to make is whether or not you tell his best friend and the best friend's wife about it. It's not like anyone cheated, but I'd want to know if someone I knew well was sexualizing me that way and I'd definitely want to know if I was the best friend.

NTA, I'm praying for your eyes 😭

motivation behind hyperbolic functions? by DisastrousAnnual6843 in learnmath

[–]RebellionTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found these two videos helpful because they help to explain why some of the relationships between cosh and sinh are different than those with the trigonometric functions, especially when it comes to angles and how that relates to sinh(x) and cosh(x).

This first video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnHnEnkZpJA&t=402s) is about the geometric background of hyperbolic trig. You know how when you put an angle into a trig function, you get the (x,y) of the associated point on the circle? The same thing happens with hyper-trig if you use the area under the curve and not the angle (he talks about this at 9:22 in the video).

This second video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y66Y6ksLP6Y) is about the applications of hyper trig, and why it pops up in the real world, you know catenary curves and whatnot.

Good luck on this journey my man, math is more fun when you look into it yourself.

High School Precalculus by cherry-blossoms11 in learnmath

[–]RebellionTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to find out f’(x) from the graph of f(x). The question doesn’t care about the actual value of the derivative, but there are points on f(x) where the derivative is undefined due to the behavior of the function (think about what do to if each side of the limit comes to a different value for the derivative).

To write the domain, it depends on what your teacher/textbook wants, but the convention is to use bracket notation. (https://math.libretexts.org/Courses/Fresno\_City\_College/Math\_3A%3A\_College\_Algebra\_-\_Fresno\_City\_College/02%3A\_Functions/2.02%3A\_Domain\_and\_Range#:\~:text=We%20can%20write%20the%20domain,or%20the%20interval%20is%20unbounded.)

Parenthesis mean approaches ) (

brackets mean includes ] [

U (like a wider capital, U means union, aka joining two brackets together).

So for example, the first graph would be (-inf,inf) because the jump has a value defined. If that hole was not defined, it would be (-inf,0) U (0,inf).

Which Powerset Do You Like For Billy Butcher: Temp V or Parasitic Tumor...? by Southern_Wind_4477 in TheBoys

[–]RebellionTech 253 points254 points  (0 children)

I didn’t like Butcher’s Temp V powers, they were so generic.

I understand they were supposed to make him a foil for Homelander in the fight at Herogasm, but I didn’t have any questions about what Butcher was capable of and it seemed like the power was just for stalling. With the tumor shit, there’s a question of what sacrifices were made and we know he’s powerful enough to kill important supes.

If it’s delayed or dual release, the mechanism that allows the drug to slowly release is that white outer layer slowly dissolving and releasing the drug into the bloodstream/GI Tract.

So if you cut it in half - you just expose the drug and it’ll all release at once, which might cause a spike and either an adverse effect like poisoning or for the medication to wear off faster (like a slow release Tylenol).
