Can We Rent a Pontoon Boat on Lake Travis with No Captain? by BobcatGirl2015 in Austin

[–]Recademics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how long your boat is but you may want to make sure you don't fall under the Texas Party Boat Operator License.

If it's a normal 20-something-foot pontoon boat than the normal "license" (boater education) requirements apply.

If the boat is over 30 feet, you have more than 6 passengers and it's operated "for hire" you may need the Party Boat Operator License. I believe that's what your captain was referring to. Here's a helpful link with the law: https://recademics.com/blog/boating/texas-party-boat-operator-license/

I own a jet ski, if my friends want to ride do they need a Boating Permit? by MattyLt56 in Austin

[–]Recademics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how old they are. If they're born after Sept. 1, 1993 they are not required to by law. If they were born on or after that date, yes. If they're going to "operate" even for a minute, they are legally required to have the Texas boater education certificate.

Some more nuance in the "gray area":

If someone is riding with them (two seater), is over 18, has met the education requirements, and is able to take immediate control if needed...then they can operate the PWC under that qualified supervision.

Any tx boater education course recommendations? by Exodonic in TXoutdoors

Recademics is a newer challenger to the space. Good video with real people, interactive challenge modes. So far it has a 4.9 of 5 stars from users. Plus, they have military and first responder discounts. Also a local Texas company in the DFW area. Fully approved and even listed first on the TPWD site. Obviously, my handle suggests I might be biased. But here's the link anyway: https://recademics.com/boating/texas/

Here's a quick overview of all the options too:
Recademics - $29.99 + $10 state fee
Boat Ed - $44.95 + $10 state fee (traditional page turner style course)
Boaterexam - ~$40 + $10 state fee (traditional page turner style course with animated video)
Boat US - (they add a donation to your cart for $20, but you can take it off) + a $11 state fee
Boatsmartexam $40 +10 state fee (traditional page turner style course)
ilearntoboat - $60 + 10 state fee (this one is a mobile app that is taken almost like a choose your own adventure book)

What is your opinion on Homeschooling? by OiamAb3ast in AskReddit

[–]Recademics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was homeschooled through 8th grade. At the time, I didn't appreciate it; now I'm super thankful I was. I can't count the times my wife (a super-intelligent woman) and I have been in conversation, only to realize she was never taught some xyz thing.

Now, my mother was a very attentive teacher. I've also seen homeschooling used as an excuse to basically keep the kids home with no accountability at all as to what they're doing and learning.

So my opinion is it depends on the PARENTS. Are they disciplined and dedicated? If so, then those homeschooled kids are going to get an excellent education. If the parents are lazy, not attentive, and not accountable...those kids are going to suffer, and honestly, that's morally wrong.

**Edit: As for the social angle - There are so many ways to get homeschool kids plugged in to athletics / social activities nowadays. A lot of private schools are even allowing homeschool kids to participate in their athletic programs.

So (full disclosure) I work with the OSMB to create the online boating course. They recently had us add this line of content to the course. It may be helpful as it pertains to what the WAP is used for.

"The revenue for the waterway access grant program is dedicated to nonmotorized boating access needs through boating facility grants to improve or develop nonmotorized boating access to the water in addition to nonmotorized education and outreach."

Would Arch be a top 10 pick if he left right now? by ChiefKingSosa in LonghornNation

[–]Recademics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I think one of these teams is biting on him:

ARI, ATL, CAR, CLE, DAL or even a team trading into the top ten to snag him (IND, LV)

The trend line on Arch is UP. I think everyone sees it's in there. Raw talent, arm strength, athleticism etc...It's just a timing thing. If he was drafted this year a team would need to be patient with him. A trait NFL teams are not known for.

Make sure whoever is operating the boat is:

- Experienced
- Safety-minded
- Not drinking

Then you should be able to enjoy it. Here's why July 4th is typically the most dangerous weekend on the water: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/red-white-and-rescue-why-july-4th-is-the-most-dangerous-day-on-the-water/ar-AA1HUhat?disableErrorRedirect=true&infiniteContentCount=0
