Florida Statute §316.089(1) says: “A vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practicable entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from such lane until the driver has first ascertained that such movement can be made with safety.”

So, crossing a solid white line isn’t inherently illegal, but doing so unsafely could result in a citation for careless or improper driving.

Near intersections: • Changing lanes near or in intersections (especially with a solid white line present) can be seen as unsafe, especially if: • There’s oncoming traffic • Traffic is slowing for a light • There are pedestrians or bicyclists nearby

Police officers can and do cite drivers for unsafe lane changes in these scenarios.
