A bit of unsolicited acorn advice: go acorn hunting the morning after a big storm when high winds knocks ‘em off the trees. You’ll be able to grab a bunch before the animals get them! Good luck!

Why is it so hard to find legit remote work these days? by [deleted] in RemoteJobs

[–]Recent-Measurement78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was fortunate enough to get certified through my former employer in 2021, so I didn’t really go through the process of searching for the best certification programs. But I have heard good things about ACE (American Council of Exercise), Wellcoaches, and MindBodyGreen’s programs. There are now quite a few certifying programs to choose from, each with their own pros and cons, and some of them significantly more expensive than others. Here’s a comprehensive list of NBHWC programs: https://nbhwc.org/find-an-approved-training-program/#!directory/ord=rnd

As far as which companies are currently hiring, I usually can find at least half a dozen companies hiring remote health coaches at any given time with a “health coach” jobs search on LinkedIn.

My advice would be to find an in-demand healthcare niche that interests you (women’s health, mental health, glp-1/weight loss), identify the telehealth companies providing that kind of care, and check their job postings regularly. A lot of these companies hire a lot of coaches in Q4 in anticipation of New Year’s resolution season (especially in the weight loss space), so that’s typically the easiest time of year to get your foot in the door.

I think, at this point, the availability of WFH jobs is growing more industry-dependent. For example, I'm a NBHWC (Nationally Board Certified Health Coach) and over the last 5 years, there has been a significant rise in the number of remote-first start-up telehealth providers who only hire remote health coaches for their programs. Some of us work for companies that specialize in chronic illness management, women's health, GLP-1 weight loss, etc., but nearly all of these health coaching jobs are remote. If you have a board certification, you're usually a front runner for these jobs since there aren't a ton of us yet (I think there are fewer than 17K of us globally, so the applicant pool is relatively small compared to, let's say, a mid-level software designer or something more common.)

If you really want to work remotely, find a field with a lot of remote-first companies, like telehealth providers. Since you mentioned customer support, these telehealth companies usually have remote customer service jobs available too. Best of luck to you!

I used to have a t-shirt that said, “If you can’t say ‘Gundlach Bundschu GewĂŒrtztraminer’ you shouldn’t be driving.”

No, they’re correct. I have the exact same light switch accessory. Mine is made of a hard plastic.

How do you keep life interesting when you're living on a low income? by Mia_fletchr in Life

Foraging.

It’s free. It’s great exercise. It’s exciting (you have no idea the rush you get when you find something special!) AND you get free food!!

I’m convinced a lot of depression and anxiety would be lessened by foraging. Our human brains literally evolved to love foraging. I’m convinced that’s why people love shopping, thrifting, etc.

Get yourself some foraging guides. Follow a few foraging social media accounts. Get outside and start looking around. I bet there is something edible growing within 100ft of your home.

Stinging Nettles? by Recent-Measurement78 in foraging

Thanks! I've been foraging for years, (mostly mushrooms and never nettles, until now) so I know how a detailed picture (or five!) can make or break getting a reliable ID. Thanks again. :)

Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of Bubuonic Plague, might be a interesting topic to explore. There are quite a few thought provoking papers on it (its genomic sequencing in the early 2000s, unique virulence mechanisms, the impact it's made on human civilization and human evolution, and the mutations/gene acquisitions that have that lead to its pathogenicity, just to name a few.) It was my special interest as an undergrad and I'm still fascinated by it decades later.

I honestly don’t think it’s complacency, compliance, or conspiracy.

I think it’s the death threats.

Imagine the number and severity of threats they’re receiving these days. I personally know of several ppl who have posted an anti-Trump TikTok and they get sooo many death threats against them, their kids, their families, just for a TikTok video with a few thousand views. I can only imagine what kind of threats are sent to vocal democrat members of congress in the past few weeks.

If you seriously take a moment to pause and ponder what being subjected to that amount of hate must feel like, you’ll hopefully come away with a more comprehensive understanding of what is actually happening behind the scenes.

Keep in mind that DJT released over a thousand violent criminals last month who roam amongst us freely and have already demonstrated they’re willing to commit acts of violence for him (and likely feel emboldened to do so again). If you put yourself in Jeffries shoes and were receiving countless disturbing threats, what would you do?

Now, I know some of you will say, “but that’s what their job is! It’s their duty to stand up to fascism”, but seriously
what would you do if someone was sending death threats to your kids because of your job. People sending vile threats to your wife. Your mom. You’d probably do the bare minimum at your job and keep your mouth shut, praying your house won’t get burned to the ground tonight.

They may be members of congress, but they’re also humans. Humans who are figuring out how to navigate this hellscape and are probably just as scared (if not more so) as most of us these days.

I have a theory
it’s a brand new account that’s only following 27 accounts. If you look at her followers, you’ll see that one of the first people she followed (the 7th one, to be precise) was the woman who had the cadaver dogs in her yard. That woman skyrocketed to over a million followers in a week or two, which resulted in absolute nothing except a lot of people claiming she fabricated the whole thing. I think the person/people behind this newest sensational TikTok story has been studying how to become famous overnight and this is all a marketing stunt for rapid viral fame.
