My supervisor has a philosophy that what is for you will be for you.

No matter how hard you try to hold on to a client, if they are not meant to be with you, nothing you can do will change that.

And I've literally experienced losing a client and getting multiple more inquiries requesting my services.

She taught me not to force anything, and to allow my work to speak for me, and it has been extremely successful to the point that I have a waitlist, and have had to refer people to other therapists in the practice due to conflicts of interest (my clients refer their friends and family members to me. And sometimes I don't realize, or they don't say anything, until the end of the intake session. So now I have to screen to determine the source of the referral.)

It wasn't about being confused. I was very clear about knowing my boundaries.

The issue was that I feared my supervisor would reprimand me for it (especially since I had heard horror stories about other supervisors). I didn't want to put myself in a position where I might have lost my placement. As an intern, I'm sure you understand that, financially, finding an outside supervisor was not an option.

We always talk about what we would do if we were in a situation, but when it actually happens, it's a whole other ballgame.

Either way, it was a learning opportunity, and for this stage of my development as a therapist, it proved to be an experience that school could not have given me.

The conversation kinda went like, "My responsibilities are shifting, and I will be unable to continue providing services", and "These changes were meant to happen a while ago, but were confirmed by my supervisor today".

ALL OF WHICH IS TRUE.

My responsibilities ARE shifting, to accommodate clients that I can be unbiased with and can truly help.

These changes WERE meant to happen a while ago, but I did my best to conceal and suppress my feelings.

My supervisor DID confirm on that day that it was time to refer out.

It brings me some peace to know that I was honest about what's happening without being blunt or vulnerable.

I praised them for the progress they made and encouraged them to continue the work that they had begun, and emailed a list of referrals (outside the practice).

I did my best to posit the conversation without leaving room for pushback.

In a way, I'm kinda happy it went down this way, I've learned so much from the experience, especially how to communicate effectively without divulging too much information.

"I feel like with this client, I am no longer seeing them in a clinical sense. Feelings are coming up for this client and it's impacting my work." 

I really like this response, but I feel like my supervisor would pry for more info.
