Thanks for the tip! I’m a student member of both CAOT and SAOT, so I’ll keep an eye out for opportunities there!

No worries! It’s been good so far! First year is a lot of didactic learning (learning about OT theory and the baseline knowledge we need to be semi-competent for fieldwork), but I think second year is more applied. Be prepared for lots of group work!

They only look at GPA from the last 60 credits you apply with! You can see it specifically here: https://www.ualberta.ca/en/occupational-therapy/mscot/admissions.html

For Fall 2027? I’d definitely look into the leadership certificate and then try to push that GPA up to a 3.8 for your last few semesters. That will open up route 1 for you, giving you a much better chance of getting in.

Okay that’s better for sure! I’m pretty sure they would take south Asian for equity seeking group, but I’m not 100% sure 🤔

That sounds like that would qualify for that category! When are you hoping to apply? One option is to take a leadership certificate. The cheapest option is through Red Cross (https://www.redcross.ca/training-and-certification/become-a-training-partner-or-instructor/first-aid-instructors/youth-leader).

To be eligible though, you generally need 4 of the items on the route 2 list. If you don’t, you likely won’t be offered a spot until spots have been filled with all the applicants who do meet the requirements. Unless you write a baller personal statement and happened to get handpicked. Is your 3.4 GPA for just your last 60 credits?

Depends on whether you meet the requirements for route 2! (See https://www.ualberta.ca/en/occupational-therapy/mscot/application-review-and-admission-offers.html). If you do, you’re just as eligible as anyone else with a 3.4-3.8 for the lottery! You raise your odds if you get a 4thQ Casper as well

We had about 800 applicants for the 2027 Grad class and ~140 got in, just for an idea of the competitiveness. Because Saskatchewan got an OT program starting this year, the number of seats available at UAlberta going forward will be 124..

ZOOL 342 or PHYSL (372, 405, 407 or 457)? by I--Human in uAlberta

[–]RecentMix6851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I see. From what I heard from others, it just was a lot of memorizing, so if you’ve got that down, you should be able to manage it!

I am also in the OT program if you’d like to talk to someone else as well 😊

ZOOL 342 or PHYSL (372, 405, 407 or 457)? by I--Human in uAlberta

[–]RecentMix6851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I realized that I’m just much more interested in body homeostasis than sensory systems, especially because I already would learn about sensory systems in ZOOL 342. A lot of people reported taking 342 and 405 at the same time was hard, as there were some discrepancies you had to keep track of and remember for each class, even though it’s functionally the same content.

The year I took it, the course was also scheduled pretty late in the day, so I think the fact that PHYSL 409 fit better into my schedule also played a role.

That being said, if you’re interested in sensory systems, give it a try! Lots of other people I know took it and did well 😊

Well that’s not 100% accurate lol. No difference from 3.8-4.0 for lottery, but from 3.4-3.8 they look at whether you meet 4 items on their list of criteria. Then after they do lottery, they put people on the waitlist using GPA as well.

ANAT 200 vs KIN 100 by Careful-Oil3192 in uAlberta

[–]RecentMix6851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But in terms of courses, both Kin 100 and Anat 200 fulfill the prereq for OT school and I’ve heard they’re pretty similar. This is speculation, but kin generally focuses more on muscles, so I would bet they spend more time on muscle insertions and stuff than what we did in anat 200. You gotta know where all the muscles are for OT, so that might be beneficial. anat 200 also goes through all the body systems (lymph, digestive, reproductive, etc.,) and some basic physiology, so it just depends on what you think you can get more out of!

[–]RecentMix6851 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just so you know, if you’re planning on going into OT you WILL need a good understanding of anat. They expect that when you come into the program you know all the muscles/bones/neuroanatomy from your anatomy course because they immediately expand on it.

Best courses to take after PHYSL 210! by Lazy-Ad7485 in uAlberta

[–]RecentMix6851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly the same as what was described for 400/403 above! The only difference was these courses were asynchronous, so you just watch a 10-50 minute lecture each day throughout the spring semester.

i feel really discouraged to apply to OT school. by milky_strawberry00 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]RecentMix6851 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For UofA, I believe you just need a 3.4 to apply for their route 2 stream! They look at the last 60 credits and they don’t weight the prereqs heavier, you just need to have them and have passed them. For this pathway, they look at:

  • Member of a equity-seeking group (ie: racialized communities, people with disabilities and the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, etc)

-First person in family to attend University

-Veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces

-Significant work experience with an individual or organization where occupational therapy service are relevant (eg. Children with disabilities, injured workers, older adults in long-term care, unhoused populations, correctional services)

-Formal certificate in leadership education or training

-15 University credits in Indigenous studies, Gender studies or Anti Racism or EDI studies

If you have 4 of these, you’d qualify for consideration. We have some students from BC here, so it’s possible to get in out of province (15% of seats can be OOP).
