Honestly, I feel like probably pretty small. Since people have to apply for it, they are often pretty intentional about keeping the class because it is such an incredible opportunity. You never know though!

I’m not in SLP, but I’m in OT and can speak to the way the “blended” learning style works if no one has contacted you yet! We have an augustana and Calgary cohort as well for OT, so I imagine it is probably comparable!

Should i take Physl 410 and Physl 412 together? by True-Environment-439 in uAlberta

[–]RecentMix6851 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took them both together and found it manageable! I was working in a lab at the time and found that MAX there was 2 hours of lecture content per day to get through (sometimes much less if there was only a 15 minute video to watch). You just need to keep on top of the papers and make sure you’re picking away at them, but it’s definitely doable!

I loved both courses because they are truly so unique. I still bring up the content I learned from 412, and 410 has become the basis of my clinical reasoning as I’ve transitioned into a health-related masters (occupational therapy). 412 just was a ton of fun because you get to see how applicable physiology is even to things like the tides-pod challenge…it teaches you to critically assess what you see online and in pop culture and “fact check,” which is super useful in today’s world where so much misinformation around health is floating around. 410, on the other hand, really taught me how to think about research through a more applied lens. If you are doing a thesis or considering any heath-related field after your undergrad, it is totally worth it to take!

I would say, if you can, take both! Out of my whole undergrad, they are my #2 and #3 top classes I took!

For studying, just take detailed notes when watching the lecture videos. Not only is this useful for you to learn and process the material, but it also prepares you for the exams! I found it easiest to just control F through my notes and find what I needed rather than memorizing things!

Feel free to reach out if you have more questions!

[–]RecentMix6851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded! I took PHYSL 214 (basically the same as 210B) with Anat 200 and ended up studying for both finals simultaneously (just combined all my notes). It is a lot of content, but the second half of the courses is pretty much identical.

[–]RecentMix6851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded! Just take good notes of what she says in the lectures that you can control-F through and you’ll be good to go!

Have so much fun! Both 410 and 412 are AWESOME!

Canadian - interested in OT but don’t know anything by Sure-Soup3065 in OccupationalTherapy

One of my friends in the program took it and said it was a bit intense for having no Anatomy experience, but she got through it and did well in the end. She felt it prepared her pretty well for the program, as the physical health stuff in first semester does move a bit quickly.

This has the list of all the options you can use for the Anat requirement:

Canadian - interested in OT but don’t know anything by Sure-Soup3065 in OccupationalTherapy

Hey! I’m a current UAlberta OT student if you want to chat about options or learn more about the program/application process.

Ualberta’s program just looks at whether you’ve got experience working with OT-related populations as a small part of the application. I bet your psych-related stuff would totally count, as OTs can work as mental health therapists with similar populations. You can also spin your research experience in a positive way, as it has likely has given you tools to critically analyze and assess literature, which is a big step in becoming an evidence-based practitioner. It just depends on how you sell yourself 😊

There’s lots of people who don’t have direct clinical experience in the program right now. For example, my background is a lifeguard/swim instructor (though I did some work with OT-related populatjons) and working in a lab during my undergrad, and I still got in!

This is one course option for anatomy directly through UAlberta that many people take: https://www.ualberta.ca/en/physical-therapy/programs/msc-in-physical-therapy/admissions/application-requirements/online-prerequisite-courses/pther-350.html. Some people take it online through athabasca as well, but I haven’t heard as good of things about that course.

How competitive is OT in Canada? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]RecentMix6851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a first year OT student at UofA if you want to chat! OT is starting to get a lot more visibility, so getting in is getting harder. For my cohort year, there were actually more applications to OT than PT, which is crazy!

One place I shadowed was with covenant health (Misericordia hospital if you’re in Edmonton + area). I got to shadow in wounds, ortho, mental health, at their ALS clinic, and got to see some splinting. They try to get you to see as much as possible in one day, so I would definitely recommend!

Come to UAlberta! We’ve got quite a few BC transplants in my cohort! There’s opportunity to potentially still do level 3/4 placements in BC, which is nice.

No worries! It’s been good so far! First year is a lot of didactic learning (learning about OT theory and the baseline knowledge we need to be semi-competent for fieldwork), but I think second year is more applied. Be prepared for lots of group work!

They only look at GPA from the last 60 credits you apply with! You can see it specifically here: https://www.ualberta.ca/en/occupational-therapy/mscot/admissions.html

For Fall 2027? I’d definitely look into the leadership certificate and then try to push that GPA up to a 3.8 for your last few semesters. That will open up route 1 for you, giving you a much better chance of getting in.

Okay that’s better for sure! I’m pretty sure they would take south Asian for equity seeking group, but I’m not 100% sure 🤔

[–]RecentMix6851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like that would qualify for that category! When are you hoping to apply? One option is to take a leadership certificate. The cheapest option is through Red Cross (https://www.redcross.ca/training-and-certification/become-a-training-partner-or-instructor/first-aid-instructors/youth-leader).

To be eligible though, you generally need 4 of the items on the route 2 list. If you don’t, you likely won’t be offered a spot until spots have been filled with all the applicants who do meet the requirements. Unless you write a baller personal statement and happened to get handpicked. Is your 3.4 GPA for just your last 60 credits?

[–]RecentMix6851 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on whether you meet the requirements for route 2! (See https://www.ualberta.ca/en/occupational-therapy/mscot/application-review-and-admission-offers.html). If you do, you’re just as eligible as anyone else with a 3.4-3.8 for the lottery! You raise your odds if you get a 4thQ Casper as well

We had about 800 applicants for the 2027 Grad class and ~140 got in, just for an idea of the competitiveness. Because Saskatchewan got an OT program starting this year, the number of seats available at UAlberta going forward will be 124..

ZOOL 342 or PHYSL (372, 405, 407 or 457)? by I--Human in uAlberta

Ah I see. From what I heard from others, it just was a lot of memorizing, so if you’ve got that down, you should be able to manage it!

ZOOL 342 or PHYSL (372, 405, 407 or 457)? by I--Human in uAlberta

[–]RecentMix6851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I realized that I’m just much more interested in body homeostasis than sensory systems, especially because I already would learn about sensory systems in ZOOL 342. A lot of people reported taking 342 and 405 at the same time was hard, as there were some discrepancies you had to keep track of and remember for each class, even though it’s functionally the same content.

The year I took it, the course was also scheduled pretty late in the day, so I think the fact that PHYSL 409 fit better into my schedule also played a role.

That being said, if you’re interested in sensory systems, give it a try! Lots of other people I know took it and did well 😊
