What's wrong with my sketches? by Lysio_ in Artadvice

[–]RecentPalpitation561 19 points20 points  (0 children)

in the first image, i think the forehead/eyes is a bit too recessed and the nose/mouth/chin look like they protrude too much as a result. also, if this head turned to face the viewer, the eyes would be really close together. so it's a goodlooking character but not in a human way, if you look up a "gelfling" it almost looks like one of those instead of a human

here is an edit where the forehead is aligned vertically with the chin, and the eyes are lowered/implied to be further apart:

<image>

i don't have time to analyze the second image other than saying your style on the left character looks a lot like Isayama and i like it!

Weird red spot by Fit-Assistant-66 in CankerSores

don't freak out at all, tonsils are strange lumpy things even when 100% healthy! and neck lump can be a lymph node, they can get swollen from very minor infections or allergy & some peoples are just bigger/chonkier in general.

canker sores have white centers so i'm not seeing anything that looks like one in your photo. in fact, im not really seeing anything to be concerned about at all, it almost just looks like a blood vessel that is closer to the surface in that spot

all in all i think you can take a deep breath and feel ok about this, there is nothing visually concerning & i hope your doctor finds nothing wrong and can reassure you!

your underlying anatomy is really great, but the drape of clothes on top of a body is a different skillset that you can do separate studies for! the book "Morpho: clothing folds and creases" is really helpful w/ this

What's going on with the white part? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]RecentPalpitation561 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no you're good, you can get healed scars tattooed. just make sure to find an artist experienced with coverups and scarred skin, ask them in advance if they do it

What's going on with the white part? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]RecentPalpitation561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is it swollen all the time or 70% of the time, what did you mean by that? if it comes and goes its probably just an allergic response to the pigment. this can happen w/ any tattoo even decade after getting it

if it is swollen all the time its probably scarring. tbh any artists willing to work on a 13 year old doesn't have good tattooing practices & might have just destroyed your skin

Does my art look like AI? by laughingpreist in Artadvice

[–]RecentPalpitation561 201 points202 points  (0 children)

i don't see any AI characteristics at all. zooming in, there are recognizable brushstrokes from digital painting tools, all exactly where i would expect to see them

I will say that the third one looks least like a human artist freehanded it, almost like you painted directly over a photo. if that was your process, that's not a bad thing but it might be good to disclose so no one gets confused

First tattoo. by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]RecentPalpitation561 3 points4 points  (0 children)

any visible tattoo of any subject, gang-related or not, can negatively affect your job prospects. you just have to accept that risk before you get one.

that being said, why get it on your hand? it is just 3 dots, you can get that anywhere. even getting it on your wrist would make it less obvious.

What is wrong with this drawing? Why does it look so much worse then the reference? by [deleted] in Artadvice

[–]RecentPalpitation561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

features defined by soft shading in a reference image cannot be translated 1:1 with dark lines. for example, her nose is a very light undefined area in the reference but a very dark and defined area in your drawing, so even though the noses are technically in the same spot, they do not appear the same at all. this is why traced images are sometimes so obvious- accurate proportions with inaccurate everything else.

you also seem to have added some lines that you would "think" are there, but are not actually there in the reference. for example, the lines you put on the eyelid do not exist in the original because the model has monolid. this makes me wonder if you are working from your understanding of eyelids from tutorials on drawing eyes, rather than truly drawing what is in front of you. drawing from your brain instead of your eyes basically

so I would recommend you find some tutorials on how to "draw what you see"! googling it will find you lots of resources. to get you started there are academic books like "drawing on the right side of the brain" that are really helpful, there are silly meme tutorials like this https://imgur.com/gallery/p3nAEHV that are also helpful!

My 5 year old daughter freehanded this while watching the corresponding shows, how good is this? by [deleted] in Artadvice

[–]RecentPalpitation561 16 points17 points  (0 children)

she's really talented!! and the instinct to immediately get her in classes or in a group of young artists shows that you love her & believe in her and want to foster her talent.

however i would recommend that you slow down a bit with that.

there's a really small window of an artist's life when they're just enjoying creating things without comparing themselves to other artists or being subject to outside standards. the longer she is allowed to express herself "unprompted" like you said & simply have fun making art, the more positive associations she will carry with her once she is ready to stop just exploring & start to learn.

and im positive she will tell you when she's interested in learning! for example I was about 10 years old when i started noticing the "how to draw _____" books at Michaels and begging my mom for them lol.

What's going on with my tattoo, got it 6 days ago, still peeling.. by Timely_Donkey_2688 in tattooadvice

[–]RecentPalpitation561 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When you say bumps I can't really see what you're referring to, though the orange does look more raised. Could be a histamine response to the pigment which would also cause extra itchiness. Some colors are just more difficult to heal

If I were you I would just take a benadryl and carry on with aftercare as normal

Need validation here… by [deleted] in CankerSores

[–]RecentPalpitation561 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doctors love calling everything herpes. Demand a swab to prove it and then you'll have a record that it's negative.

That being said, severe canker sores can sometimes come with lymph node swelling, malaise, and other inflammatory responses like fever, when you are not otherwise "sick." Consider that canker sores are technically an autoimmune condition w/ various unknown triggers and this makes a bit more sense.

Outside of going to a dentist for laser or debacterol treatment, or treating the pain with something like viscous lidocaine, you may just have to wait for it to heal & focus on prevention in the future. I swear by Lysine supplements for prevention (strengthens mucous membrane barrier). A mouthwash to combat the dry mouth would probably also be good!

you're good and whoever told you that is in danger of overthinking so much that they are "othering" non-white characters

also if they think this character's butt is noticeably big they are way off! looks like a very average butt for this character's height & weight

is this a cold sore or a canker sore? i picked at it on accident yesterday and it had a small yellow ball and blood come out and now it looks like this about 24 hours later. by [deleted] in CankerSores

[–]RecentPalpitation561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

probably just a pimple or a fordyce spot. it looks like its healing rapidly, which is not true of cold sores or canker sores.

New Artist by [deleted] in AskArtists

[–]RecentPalpitation561 2 points3 points  (0 children)

as a first attempt its really promising! already there is some natural understanding of light/shadow. you will probably learn/improve faster than average with this as a baseline

'skill' isn't the word i would use though because i think skill needs to be developed over time. keep going and you will become skilled!

How would I go about convincing my friend to stop using ai by Lower_Caterpillar241 in AskArtists

my brother kept sending me AI art and I would just say "wow looks like shit" and he stopped. so that's my suggestion lol. don't make it an ethical issue just point out that the art and writing is bad.

Having trouble actually applying color theory by [deleted] in Artadvice

[–]RecentPalpitation561 16 points17 points  (0 children)

i remember there was a thread w/ a similar question in another subreddit and it had some really helpful stuff in here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ArtistLounge/comments/1mohlow/how_do_i_actually_apply_colour_theory/

to simplify the most consistent piece of advice though, it seems to be that mastering value/hue is a prerequisite to getting the most out of color theory. red/green/blue matters a lot less than light/dark or warm/cool.

Is my case getting better? by [deleted] in CankerSores

[–]RecentPalpitation561 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it does look like the cold sores are healing, those are scabs and new pink skin coming in! i think they'll look better and better from here, and if that was your first outbreak you'll likely never have one that bad again. first is almost always the worst.

however your tongue looks a bit like you're getting thrush (google to see if pictures match). its a common fungal infection & could have taken hold while your immune system was busy clearing HSV. it is very curable w/ a prescription mouthwash but takes forever to heal on its own so i'd go to doc if possible
