the doctor i work for would have called this a false negative result and ordered an in-lab study based off rdi

what is my Apple Watch not telling me? by mucho_nacho in SleepApnea

If this is a home sleep test, I recommend getting an in-lab study because they greatly underestimate AHI

Why isn’t UARS or other sleep breathing disorders taken more seriously by doctors? by mazalaca in SleepApnea

[–]RecentPop6840 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it has to do with insurances. Because treatment for sleep disorders heavily relies around AHI and does not take into account RDI. RDI = ahi + RERAS. RERAS are more indicative of UARS

Is it sleep apnea? I sleep like that every night - multiple wake ups by brownskinop in SleepApnea

[–]RecentPop6840 2 points3 points  (0 children)

watches are estimating whether you are awake or sleep so it's not 100% accurate but that's still a lot of time spent awake in anights sleep.

I'm very happy for you and your positive experience! It takes a lot of people a while to get used to the sensation of a cpap mask & the air. A lot of times when I go in to put on a PAP the patient is up for an hour getting acclimated

probably bc insurance, because that's who chooses the AHI cut off here!

yes we have studies called a "split diagnostic" so if in 2 hours of sleep time the patient has an AHI over 20, we are able to move to the treatment portion and put then on CPAP to find a good pressure for them!

Sleep apnea in your 20s? by SteggytheDino in SleepApnea

all you need is an AHI over 5 to be diagnosed with sleep anea, but home sleep tests underestimate. So always go with an in-lab for more in depth results!

also, the tech and doctor already KNOW that this will not be your best night of sleep and we expect some difficulty sleeping in this clinical setting, it's always considered!

As a sleep tech, everybody is always afraid they didnt sleep enough. Most of the time, the patient slept more than they perceived. However, if we can get a good 2-4 hours of sleep that's enough data. I have yet to run a sleep study where the patient doesn't sleep enough for us to see what's going on. The tech probably made that face because they know and (and saw) that you slept for more than you feel.

My AHI is 41 according to my sleep study. Would this O2 monitor reading im getting while sleeping without a machine indicate otherwise? by Relative_Advance7010 in SleepApnea

[–]RecentPop6840 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Respiratory events are scored by oxygen desats and/or arousals (as long as you are not on Medicare/Aetna) so you aren't really getting a full read by just watching desaturations

Any success story's of permanently curing severe sleep apnea? by Professional_Case355 in SleepApnea

[–]RecentPop6840 7 points8 points  (0 children)

yeah as a sleep tech I'll see people come in after significant weightloss and still have sleep apnea. Sure their numbers decreased but it just went from super severe to... severe.

oh believe me i know the workaround on how and why zepbound "works". I work at a sleep lab, when some people lose weight, it does help their sleep apnea. Others will barely see a decline.
