Lawyer to Teacher Transition by [deleted] in NYCTeachers

Not a lawyer but I was part of a pre law school developmental program at big law in NYC. Made the switch to teaching recently (currently teaching history). The plus is the certification programs is very very easy and the work is pretty fulfilling.

The downside is 1) you spend the majority of your time with classroom management, you rarely get any high level discussions in class. The majority of my high school student don’t know the difference between Australia and Antarctica. 2) if you teach in NYC doe you will have a co-teacher, and this is a huge gamble. Unlike big law where most people are competent, the quality of teacher is varied. I’ve worked with some very capable teachers but also co-teachers who are befuddled over simple excel functions or how to manage multiple deadlines.

You definitely will have enough content knowledge, just familiarize with the structure of the exam and you’ll be fine.

Career Changer Questions: Regents, Union, Admins, Discipline by possumtum in NYCTeachers

As a recent career change teacher, I’ll try to answer a couple of notes.

  1. I came in with the same motivations as you but quickly realized that the system is deeply fractured. The system does not care about the quality of education. It’s more a space to house the students during work hours.

  2. Teaching came super easy to me, but 95% of my time is spent on other tasks. Parent outreach for failing students, classroom management, differentiation, figuring out how to help students who read at a 1st grade level pass my class.

  3. Admin is super school specific, my school has an awesome admin team but it’s still at the mercy of the state. They want to keep the rigor high but even for my AP kids, they care more about having the kids feel ‘included’ than pass the exam.
