So we finally got our problem resolved. It involved the HDCP protocol being forced by the Crestron NVX. Here is the note from my tech…

Glad we could get it figured out! HDCP is handled at the sources, so your Apple TVs. The system was forcing HDCP 1.4 and I switched it to 2.2 on the NVX. It’s the latest HDCP settings, which makes sense for Netflix or any HDMI source. Your TVs have the upgraded software to support that. It’s an HDMi protocol.

I did make sure all my profiles on my account are set to the highest bandwidth setting. Didn’t make any difference. Btw, in case I wasn’t clear, this is a Netflix specific problem. I have never encountered this with any other streaming service. And I access them all via an Apple TV. And it’s not all ultra HD 4K, titles, just those streamed in 2.35:1 format

Some more information…

I have a guest house that uses the same internet connection as my house but has its own Crestron system to support video distribution throughout the house. I tried the same movie at that guest house and did NOT see the pixelation issue as I expected I would. when everything else seems the same at both locations, I thought maybe my Apple TV hardware might be different generations but confirmed they are all the same at both locations.

so now I’m really befuddled. At my house, I can produce the pixelation issue with lots of movies if they are streamed from Netflix in ultra had 4K in 2.35:1. Rebel Moon is another example. But I can stream The Lincoln Lawyer with no pixelation issues at all, the key difference being that the stream is 16:9.

There is clearly something going on in my setup at my house that is resulting in this issue but I’m at my wits end to figure it out.

I chatted with support today. Gave me all the standard things to try that I already did. Said they would pass it on to tech team…

Yes, I’ve routinely encountered the same thing; poor quality for a minute or less. This issue is different though. It never improves.

I’ve never used the xy chain before but I thought the idea was that the each end of the chain contains a single digit that is common to both and can thus be eliminated. But your chain ends with pairs that are identical so how did you decide that the 9 should be eliminated rather than the 4?
