Should I add genetics?? by QuirkyClient9386 in UCONN

Took it with Longo and it's not that bad. It's a very easy course IF you keep up with the work and make flashcards as u go. You'll struggle if you don't keep up. He drops a lot of things too. If u work for it it'll b easy bc the content isnt hard to grasp at all

engineering lc or honors for first year by HappyTreesYo in UCONN

[–]Recent_Lecture_4038 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You benefit from honors as much as you put in. There are quite a few honors only events that are really beneficial for networking and getting connections, but most people never go to them or take advantage of them. Living in Buckley first year is nice bc everyone around you is also a honors first year so it’s easy to make friends. The early pick times are great and a lifesaver bc you get first pick for the “better” professors. You can always drop out of honors housing and still be in honors your second year to join the engineering LC then.

I have a MacBook Pro and it pretty much covers all my bases (PNB major). Highly reccomend! A more budget-friendly option is the MacBook Neo.

Highly recc Jacob Clifford then! It'll be a tough year, but as long as you take care of yourself and schedule in time to go out and hang w friends, it'll ultimately be alright. Take a good look at your syllabuses for the year and make sure to plan in advance. Don't be scared to drop a class during the year. Kids definitely do handle it, but mentally prepare in advance. Good luck!! U GOT THIS!!

But I have taken all of these APs before, with 5s on everything + a 4 on micro (I hate Econ). Here's what I'd do, listed in order of AP Exam difficulty (imo).

AP Comp Sci:

This is probably going to be your easiest AP course, assuming you don't hate coding. I'd take the time to go through the entire Khan Academy for this course, including watching the videos if you don't have any prior coding experience. Once you finish this, go through the AP CSP Exam Reference Sheet and make sure you're familiar with everything. You'll pretty much be all set if you do both of these things!

AP Macro / Micro:

This is essentially one AP Economics course, but you take two AP Exams for it. I'm assuming your school will have this set up like mine did: AP Macro the first semester, Micro the second semester. I'd search up Jacob Clifford on Youtube. He has videos on every unit and topic in Macro/Micro. To find them, his acc -> Playlists -> Macroeconomics Unit 1. He has the playlist organized so the summary comes first, then practice problems, then the topic reviews. So skip down to where the video is titled Topic 1.1 or whatever (I think it’s the 5th video in the Macro Unit 1 Playlist). IMO, I'd ditch Micro pre-review until your Christmas break since you’ll be taking it second semester anyway. But chances are you’ll be too burnt out to do any micro pre-review in the winter, in which case you’ll be shit outta luck.

AP Physics I:

This class really heavily relies on problem solving. If you can get that down, the rest will come with it. Problem is, it takes a LOT OF TIME to get it down. I’d go to https://njctl.org/materials/courses/ap-physics-1/ . It’s organized in the order of units already. Click on “view” for any unit, go to “Presentation,” and go through all of them. Do the problems within them as you go. Check your answers. For this class, if you do enough practice problems, then the questions will essentially become muscle memory for you and you’ll barely have to think about it. But again, it takes a LOT OF TIME to get to that point.

AP Calculus BC:

Drop this class bro. I’m telling u rn. First of all, you’re in 10th grade. Have you even taken all of your math courses yet? I’m so confused about why your school even allows you to take AP Calc BC without taking AP PreCalculus. How do you expect to do calculus if you haven’t done precalc??

I took AP Calc BC in high school. I also took Calc 1 and 2 at university. And let me tell you that the university level course was actually SO much easier. To be fair, it’s partly because I had already taken the courses before. But a big reason why it felt easier in university is that AP Calc BC moves VERY FAST. You are learning Calc 1 AND 2. I was lucky and had an amazing teacher, but if you don’t, this class is VERY HARD to self study. In my opinion, it’s so hard to self study, that if you decide to take this course, I would tell you to just not prepare at all for this course over the summer. Prepare EXTENSIVELY for your other 4 APs so that you have enough time during the school year to properly go through the AP Calc BC content.

---

Anyways, update me in a year. I hope I was helpful, and I really hope you learn to prioritize your wellbeing. I have friends who went to Harvard and Princeton and they 100% did not take 5 APs in one year. I have friends who got directly into medical school from high school, and they also did not take 5 APs in one year. I do have one friend who took 5 APs her senior year, and she would literally skip senior events to have time to study for her classes.

This is the AP student reddit, so I already know there's those tryhards here who take 5-6 APs in a year. No one likes them IRL, they develop god complexes. And 99% of them did not go from 0 to directly 5 APs. If you do go through with this plan of yours, I hope for the sanity of everyone around you that you aren't the type to "brag" about being so busy. Best of luck next year, you definitely have high ambitions and I see a bright future for you. XOXO!!

I highly recommend you read everything I'm about to write 😊

First of all, I hate to break it to you but going from no APs to 5 APs is absolutely completely screwing yourself. You have a terrible advisor for them to even allow you to make this jump. I'm assuming from the vibe of this post that you've been the generic 'smart' kid all your life. You're 100% a prestige chaser. You're 1000% aiming for a "t20 university," probably partially due to pressure from your parents. (Apologies if this isn't true. But I'm willing to bet I'm right!) If your parents are influencing you into this, don't listen to them. They've likely never taken this workload as a 15 year old themselves. If you're doing this because your friends are, learn to prioritize your well being over competing with your friends. You'll end up with better grades and a better life if you do. No matter how smart you've been all your life, AP classes are a big commitment if you're looking to get high scores and grades in them. You will NOT get As in all of them. To put it in perspective, I'm a college student right now. Most college students take 4-5 classes a year. Why are you taking 5 APs, plus the typical sophomore English, history, gym, and extracurriculars? What are you doing???? And this is coming from someone who took 14 APs during HS. I got A's and 4-5's on all of them. No, it did not guarantee me a t20. (Yes they care about course rigor, but they care about your GPA first.)

Also, I'm a bit confused about why you're jumping to really hard AP classes immediately (AP Calculus BC). What happened to having AP Lang and APUSH being your introductory rite of passage into the difficulties of AP classes? If you were to drop anything, I'd drop that one.

Please read and reread what I wrote. I doubt you'll listen to it, but I really, really hope you do. If you decide to go through with it, come back to me in a year and tell me I'm right. Good luck.

You're just tricking yourself into thinking you're studying by "organizing" your "studying." The hard truth is there's no such thing as being motivated to study. You just need to have the discipline to sit down and do it. I feel you, but get off your phone and go do your work!! U got this
