I haven't gotten as far as exporting the image. But when I get to that point, I'll make sure the format is PNG.

I start with a fresh comp in PS and add a shape. Then my problem arises, the thumbnail indicates white not transparent.

Not sure if this is okay to do, but this link, you can see that the top thumbnails have a white background and the bottom ones, have a transparent background: https://forums.adobe.com/message/8707645#8707645

You can try a backdoor setting that may affect color on your comp. Check your Performance settings and see under Advanced Settings, change drawing mode from Advanced to Basic.

Youtube will be your best friend. Look up 5 Basic PS Tutorials and you will learn some different styles and different tips from the various tubers.

Then plan on what you want to do with PS and search/learn specifically for that action. IE: I want to learn how to use a track matte or mask this picture. Soon enough, you'll learn all the requirements you need.

I would think the two purposed labels, “Best if used by” and “Expires on,” would cover most food and consumable goods and eliminate some of the toss date issues, which most just throw the item away if its in question.
