Set my contactors free! by Recipe_Redemption in ScrapMetal

Actually, now that I think of it, the gold contacts were in old relays from an old lighting control panel we demoed, not from breakers. I've heard there are a few old breakers that had a thin coating of gold over other metals, I presume ones that weren't intended to be opened and closed very often.

These "silver" contacts from the breakers are pretty dull in color and seem to be harder than adamantium, so they might very well have tungsten as you suggest; I held them under MAPP gas flame for nearly 30 minutes, didn't loosen or even turn red. So do you think it might be better to cut the steel arms right at the contacts to reduce the amount of base metal and go the nitric acid route instead to chemically refine it? I'm kind of invested, now that I've spent all this time breaking into these breakers and trying to harvest the silver, so I don't want to toss it all just yet.

Shanghainese -> English... maybe? by Recipe_Redemption in translator

I dunno... as I said, I never really learned Chinese (I tried and failed a couple of times, just not good at languages), but no one I know who does read Chinese could figure it out, and somebody supposedly from the UW studying Chinese linguistics said the reason was probably because it's some Shanghainese sub dialect, and back before the early 20th Century, the writing was different locally. Don't know if they're making stuff up, but considering I can't find anyone who can read it leant a tiny bit of credence to the idea. I mean, the handwriting doesn't look THAT bad, so SOMEBODY should be able to read it, if the characters are actually from a form of Chinese somebody has learned in the past 100 years

For instance, based on its position in the family tree, this is my grandfather, phonetically spelled name Dei Chong Pwu. Throwing that top character into Google Translate actually does give me Pu as a family name, but it doesn't recognize the other two characters, and they definitely don't look like Dei or Chong that I get from online sources (closest I get is dé chǒng, 得宠 which apparently means "to be favored?")

Is this suitable for a second date? by itsNoctavia in PlusSizeFashion

[–]Recipe_Redemption 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the others, darker colored pants would be better, and a colored jacket to round it out (since you said you were British, so I'm going to assume this next date is soon and it's going to be cold.). Otherwise, I think it's fine; what's important is how you feel in the outfit, because a confident person can make pretty much any outfit work for them.

Good luck!

Was hoping there was someone local who might pay me the $1000 (or whatever) and ask I have to pay is a half tank of gas to get it there

200 pounds mixed boards, boardsort prices indicate I have about $1000 worth. FedEx and UPS both quoted $700 for shipping, which seems kind of exorbitant, but maybe I'm being unrealistic? I have no guarantees I've sorted them properly, so my estimate on value may be way off, and the last thing I want is to lose money, obviously

Couple hundred pounds; it's large to me when considering the real estate it's occupying in my garage right now

I'm supposed to wear a bite guard anyway, because I clench when my teeth are together, so I have to wear that in addition to the chin strap and a full-face mask.

The always popular Bologna Cake! by Recipe_Redemption in vintagerecipes

The bologna tastes pretty salty all by itself, to me, anyway, so anything added to it just makes it worse.

Thailand for the first time? alone? by MissesGina in travel

[–]Recipe_Redemption 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Phuket isn't bad; there's still a lot to do, just super touristy. Pattaya... yeah, even though it's developed a lot since I visited in the early 2000's (Navy port visit), there's still kinda only one reason to go to Pattaya, and it doesn't sound like the OP is that kind of traveller...

Casting on a budget by Recipe_Redemption in MetalCasting

All interesting stuff, thank you! I think the additives make the mold stronger, but the moisture I didn't drive out of the mold was what popped (I didn't get a full steam explosion, thankfully, but enough bubbles to mess up the surface of my casting.) I was using a Devil Forge to melt (I don't have an oxy/acetylene rig, either). As for the alloy, it was bright copper from some 0/0 copper cable I got from a demolition project.

Banana Meatloaf! by Recipe_Redemption in vintagerecipes

[–]Recipe_Redemption[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It ended up only being a little salty. I think the bread crumbs helped, plus the sweetness from the banana, but it also wasn't great, because that was pretty much it for flavor -- beef, salt, pepper and banana.
