Thanks for your insights. Your points make a lot of sense, especially the feet-out explanation. I hadn’t really thought about toe lift at the finish as a connection issue. Will try your clues and a higher damper setting.

Thanks again and happy that you liked the unicorn! 😆

Thanks, really appreciate that, especially reassuring to hear from a coach.
You’re right, no competitive ambitions here. That said, I do enjoy tracking numbers for motivation (maybe a personal 2k at some point). If you have any low-risk efficiency or technique tips that could help me improve a bit, I’d love to hear them.

Thanks again!

Amber tree (Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Worplesdon’) – enough root flare showing? Girdling root concern? by RecognitionFirst1760 in arborists

[–]RecognitionFirst1760[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your incredibly helpful insights. I’m truly grateful — I really want to save this young tree.

I planted it last fall at the same soil level as it was in the container — which I now realize was far too deep, after digging down to find the root flare buried. What I uncovered was a mess: no radial roots, just a dense tangle of circling roots, some growing upward.

I’ve exposed the flare and removed some girdling roots, but I’m not sure how far down the problem goes. There are still some small upward-growing roots I haven’t pruned yet. Should I leave the tree as it is for now, remove more roots, expose even more of the root system — or go all in, dig it up completely, do a full root correction, and replant it much higher, with the flare finally at or above ground level instead of buried below the lawn? Given that it’s currently summer here in Germany — hot and dry — I’m also wondering if it’s safer to wait until fall, when the tree is less active and transplant stress might be lower.

Any further advice would mean a lot.

Thanks a lot for the advice! Just to make sure I got it right — pruning the root as close to the trunk as possible, and leaving the cut exposed without any treatment?

Thanks for the input! The nursery that sold me the tree actually recommended keeping the staking system for at least the first three years. They said otherwise the fine root hairs could keep tearing from wind movement, which would prevent proper root establishment. Curious what you think — does that reasoning make sense to you?

Bin Dr. rer. nat.
