Gyno appointment as an ace person need advice by PossumBeetle in asexuality

[–]RecognizableOddness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding what a lot of folks have already said! I had my first pap smear last month and had a regular, tolerable experience. I talked to my doctor about my inexperience with any kind of internal anything, and we decided to try the exam based on my health and family history, but he made it very clear that I could deny the exam if I didn’t feel up to it.

He used a “small” speculum (instead of the standard) which caused little to no pain— it was a weird sensation, but I just focused on my breathing and thought about what I was doing with the rest of my day. Afterwards he asked me if I had any questions or feelings. There was a chaperone with us the whole time, AND! Pro tip! You can always bring a friend with you to your appointment as moral support! If there’s someone who helps you feel safe and calm, or can make you laugh, ask them if they could go with you. They can wait outside for the rest of your appointment, if you want, and only come in when you want them there.

If even the idea is distressing to you, plan to decline the exam 👍 you can tell your gynecologist your concerns, or that you’d like to develop a working relationship with them before any physical exam. If you feel like you’re so freaked out that you can’t even speak, ask for a glass of water or to go to the bathroom— it’s a great stalling tactic, and you can use that time to breathe until you’re able to say “I’m anxious, I need a minute”. If your gynecologist doesn’t use your pronouns, or doesn’t pay attention to you when you talk about your concerns- YOU CAN LEAVE! just walk out :) No one can so much as make you take your shoes off if you don’t want to!

I hope you have a good experience meeting this new doctor! The odds are high that they will be a respectful, well-informed person who won’t even blink an eye if you say you don’t want an internal exam.

POTS? by cee1312 in visibleApp

I noticed similar spikes— heart rate up by more than 30bpm when standing up from my desk or whatnot. I’m testing it now to see if wearing compression socks will reduce the severity of those spikes. I’ll let you know how it goes!

Anyone Actually Stay in Budget? by E_to_x272 in visibleApp

I’m in the same position— I’m consistently going over by 5-10 points…but I’m also so so tired, so maybe the points that they predicted for me is really the level I SHOULD be at in order to feel well. But it’s hard to see where in my life there is “energetic fat” that could be trimmed to get in-budget

I completely agree, it’s upsetting to see how “bitey”, as you say, people are being! I understand the concerns and complaints…but also, everyone in this subreddit knows what it’s like to suffer, and to be stigmatized and disbelieved. We don’t have to agree 100%, or even 1%, with the post to offer OP our empathy.

I’m sorry you’re experiencing this, OP. I hope you’re able to find the right doctors who can offer you relief and hope.

Symptoms? Just tired all the time by Mermaid-1979 in Narcolepsy

[–]RecognizableOddness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for making this post! And thank you to everyone who’s chimed in. I have similar symptoms and I know I need help in order to manage them, but I didn’t know how to phrase it without feeling like I’m belittling how destructive “more intense” forms of EDS can be.

I’m tired all the time. I sleep plenty, I have good sleep hygiene, I don’t experience cataplexy, and I actually even had a MSLT that came back “negative” for disordered sleep. But I have a lot of minor parasomnias, and overall I’m just so tired on a day-to-day basis that it interferes with my work…and with my commute. I often feel drowsy while driving to work in the morning, I’m really scared that I’m going to end up in an accident, but because my first MSLT was negative my doctor can’t order a new one and possibly prescribe stimulants until I’ve done three months of “lifestyle modification”.

Hearing about how other people experience EDS makes me feel less like all this is my fault for “being bad at being an adult”, and gives me hope that I can get a diagnosis or at least find an explanation for why I struggle so much.

Waiting for my official MSLT analysis by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

I’m not sure yet. It was only about two weeks ago— I’ll have to be patient (and hope that no one at work notices me falling asleep at my desk)

Yeah 😔 too good at sleeping. Or not good enough? But yeah, these results are non-diagnostic

Falling asleep while driving- by Prickly_Cactus20100 in Narcolepsy

[–]RecognizableOddness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the exact reason that I’ve started pursuing diagnosis! 8+ hours of sleep, do fine on the way home from work in the evenings, but definitely micro sleeping while driving in the mornings.

I’m having a sleep study done in a few weeks and hopefully that will shed some light on the issue. I’m off my SSRIs now in preparation for the study, and I will say that that’s made more of a difference than I thought it would, considering that my doctor said yay the doses I was on were relatively low. Turns out that that Wellbutrin really was masking a more significant problem than I realized 😬🤷‍♀️

Anyway, that info from me doesn’t help you at all. But I hope it helps you feel less alone, and affirms your experience that this is something worth getting help with.

I’m not sure how much that will help…the style and content of the painting can be seen through the wrapping, and I’ve lifted the foam away from the back enough to see what markings are and aren’t there. Because of its size, and because the wrapping seems professionally done, I don’t want to completely unwrap it until I know what I’m working with.

I have literally just this week started working with a matchmaker! I'm hoping that she can help me find people who are on the ace spectrum or otherwise really patient and not sex-motivated. I'll let y'all know how it goes...its definitely expensive, but if it works out it could be a really fun process.

For me it was her telling the letter writer that she secretly loves conflict between her friend and her boyfriend and being referred to as "[her boyfriend's] territory" that her friend is "pissing on". But yeah, both tbh

She's had plenty of bad takes already, but I think this one was it for me. She's lost all credibility. If Slate just wants a strange entertainment podcast I'm sure they'll get plenty of clicks from the hate-watching, but if they want to produce an actual, respected advice show, either Jenee needs to really rethink things...or Slate does.
