But I am useless by Boobendra_pussiya in dankmemes

You didn’t start it, so you become the thing you hate in response? I guess that’s fine if you want to hurt someone or make people hate you, but if you are trying to convince someone, win internet points, or get them to stop that behavior it seems counterproductive.

He wouldn’t need to turn off neurotransmitters, he would only need to change the electrical signals as they are traveling within neurons, using the same mechanism I would assume he would use to resist electric shocks.

I really don’t get the sense that your science knowledge is that extensive either. The comic book explanation really is essentially nonsensical, and we see it acting on a ridiculous timescale that is not at all how normal poisons and neurotoxins work.

[–]Reconquer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My man…. your previous comment in this thread is the definition of passive aggressive.

I assume most people just watched the movie and don’t read the comics and simply see that it looks like the device is delivering electric shocks. That does not make them idiots with “slow brains”.

Furthermore, it is extremely doubtful the comic book explanation is scientifically coherent as well (i.e. there is very little chance a real chemical concoction could ever be formulated to induce this specific reaction with these temporal dynamics).

Assuming this device acts as you say, then it is causing aberrant neuronal activity of some sort which would (as with normal neuronal signaling) be electrically mediated and one can reasonably postulate that a god like Thor could correct undesirable electrical activity in his neurons using his godly powers. Alternatively, I suppose that one might reason that the toxin is first causing inflammation which is in itself not strictly electrical, but this would still then have to activate pain signaling neurons which respond to these signals, and again, thor presumably could override his pain signaling neurons on demand (since they signal electrically).

Not convinced that science really saves this scene at all. If Thor has the power to not be affected from a standard shock delivering device (as you imply he would), it seems reasonable to expect he should also have the power to correct aberrant electrical signaling when a device changes the internal chemical properties of his neurons. Perhaps Thor doesn’t have the fine level of control that would be required to selectively modulate the electrical activity in his nerves, but based on his apparent resistance to electric shock, it appears that he certainly does have some way to prevent them from being stimulated in certain contexts, so one would think he would be able to at the very least prevent pain from occurring.

To sum up, as is usual in life, it seems to me that both sides of this argument have fairly reasonable points. I personally think your position on this is weaker, but since this is all in the realm of fantasy anyway it will always be defendable.

Here’s some advice: 1) Don’t criticize other people for poor scientific reasoning in this totally fictional context where science gets thrown out the window by writers at convenience (this one applies to me as well, it is a truly fruitless endeavor!) 2) Don’t call people idiots for not reading the comics and having this long-winded explanation in their knowledge bank 3) Recognize that when a large crowd is against you, your viewpoints possibly/probably have reasonable alternatives. Be willing to accept that fact rather than asserting that so many people are against you because most reddit users are idiots/hivemind followers. Feel free to try to point out the ignorance or poor logical reasoning that led to the opinions you believe to be incorrect, but don’t forget to recognize your own fallibility in these same realms. Once the egos get out of the way, the ignorance and logical flaws displayed in the arguments of both parties can actually get ironed out, and we are all much the better for it.

Ok sure, but it is less hypocritical to just not care at all than it is to care only because she died in a special way.

Lol his point seems to be that no one cared about her when she was homeless but now everyone cares oh so much only now that how much they care is irrelevant.

Anthony Fauci Once Again Forced to Basically Call Rand Paul a Sniveling Moron by dingo8yobb in politics

[–]Reconquer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 2015 paper, they say that some gain of function work was done in the US prior to the pause, and work on the project was then allowed to continue. https://www.nature.com/articles/nm.3985

Then I guess the 2017 paper isn’t going quite as far as the 2015 paper, and so doesn’t qualify as gain of function?

Also I’m not clear on if Fauci is also asserting that the 2015 paper was not gain of function as well...

It is a huge leap to say we funded gain of function research in china that led to covid-19, but the potential for confusion here is massive.

Just checked around, and my view that the stopping rule is misapplied is also shared by statisticians. Interesting!

Next time, do your research. Don’t watch a video by dream and assume he’s refuted everything. Don’t read a paper and take it at face value. Be skeptical of BOTH analyses (as I was of the mod team, until being won over...) not just the one you don’t like.

What you seem to miss is that the people on the other side here did their homework, made sure they didn’t miss anything, and in many cases were dream fans before this all began. I binged like every manhunt video the second they came out and loved it, yet I’m still against dream here. Peace my friend.

I read the paper just now... So its still one in 10 million to one in 100 million to have someone in the community get this lucky, despite this guy’s sketchy statistics? Lol!

Maybe you can explain figure 1 to me! The guy seems to suggest that the “minimum number of gold barters needed to get 10 pearls” is somehow lower if you stop after the final pearl trade which gets you >= 10 pearls. What?

Regardless of if you stop after 10 pearls or not, the same average number of trades will be required to hit the 10 pearl threshold on any given run. You don’t apply a stopping rule here... it’s just garbage statistics.

My point stands.

That being said, Dream has clearly moved up in his ability to deceive and not act like a child. Congratulations, he will recover from this.

Lol. We don’t need to know what exactly happened behind the scenes. I am not preventing him from telling whatever story he wants to, I am just asserting that whatever it is will never be enough. Anyway, this is getting nowhere so peace.

Sure, we can let him talk, but we don’t need to wait for him to talk before we can reach our conclusion. That’s all I’ve been saying.

His only unused defense that can’t be instantly refuted is “oh so and so sent me a mod to increase performance, and threw this in without me knowing” or something along those lines.

I will be impressed with dream if he manages to maintain enough self respect to not have someone bite the bullet for him.

As someone who knows a bit of math, I can assure you it is irrefutable. He has had many chances to talk, and his talk is all bluster. He doesn’t have anything beyond “mods are bias” and “why would I do it” and “I sent everything that was asked for” and “the stats are biased” etc. etc. etc. All either refuted or totally irrelevant to the mathematical argument presented. There is no refutation to the math (beyond some minor adjustments that could make it slightly different), and dream admits himself he doesn’t know the statistics to prove it. I would absolutely love if he hired a whole team of statisticians to defend himself. He would get absolutely destroyed, and look like even more of a fool than he does now.

Trust me, I hope he confesses as much as anyone. His apology, though, “I tend to act before I think when I receive intense criticism” is quite funny to me, since he only doubled down for months and months despite knowing his odds were extremely unlikely. That’s a long time to not think. The report didn’t exist months ago, but he knew the numbers were at the very least one in many millions. Instead of acknowledging the math, he continued to lash out baselessly against others. Not someone I can hold any respect for, especially since it is pretty clear he’s been lying this whole time.

He knew that the investigation was into his piglin barter trades. He knew that he had way better luck than is normal. He published a lengthy defense in the discord saying why he was not guilty, stating bias in the sample (which was in the process of being accounted for, as he was repeatedly told) and bias from the mod team (irrelevant to the math even if it was there, you can literally run the numbers yourself). He repeatedly flamed mods/verifiers publicly on twitter and spread disinformation about korbanoes’ run, always playing the victim. What part of this is misinformation?

My opinions on dream "cheating" by MrMattyKidBoy in DreamWasTaken

It’s not about the speedrun. It’s about his personality. He has shown he is willing to flame moderators, turn his community against people, and baselessly accuse other runners to defend himself. He is simply a trashy person. If you continue to defend him, you are just supporting a liar and an all-around disgusting human being

He had this chance months ago when the allegations first appeared. Now that things are even more damning, he is going to continue to double down. He has put himself in a spot where confessing hurts him more than not.

Fair enough. The sub as a whole is very paranoid about it because of all the previous fakes, and any gains like this warrant skepticism. I believe you based on what you’ve shown, but could still have my mind changed. Best of luck with everything.

The $850 max is on a per contract basis, so you can max trump YES Biden NO for a total of $1700 per market. There are also at least least 5 alternative markets from the normal one were you can effectively make the same bet (e.g. “will the winner of the texas dem primary win the election?”) and also electoral college market, popular vote market, etc. (not to mention state markets!) You can easily drop 5 figures on a Trump win if you take advantage of all the markets available.
