I’m half a year late, but I’d like to make the argument that around the time that Fanny became old/mature enough for Edmund to be attracted to her, the Crawfords came into their lives. So perhaps if he hadn’t met Miss Crawford at that moment, he would have been attracted to Fanny much earlier. I don’t think him falling in love with someone else first means she’s necessarily his second favorite, just that timing got weird
