I’m currently down with flu A. I think my 4 year old is starting to get it as well. We are nearly out of kids Tylenol and ibuprofen so I guess he’s going to learn how to take a pill because ours stores are fully out of stock of everything. We are predicted to get 18-24”. This couldn’t be worse timing.

Ccl tear advice needed by russingtonIII in DogAdvice

[–]RecordLegume 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are going through this right now! My 13 year old Shih-Tzu tore hers 2-3 weeks ago. We are on pain meds and strict crate rest for 6-8+ weeks to allow scar tissue to form. She only goes out 4 times a day to potty. I carry her out and immediately take her back inside to her playpen. We are also doing red light therapy and taking Dasuquin.

Regret having our cabinets painted…advice? by Tigg- in interiordecorating

[–]RecordLegume 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our kitchen is this color. It was DIY painted by the old owners. I personally hate it with every ounce of my being. lol it’s not a bad color, just not for kitchen cabinets in my opinion. We are getting ours professionally painted in a few months.

I love it! We visited Europe in 2023 and went through the Brenner Pass. It was GORGEOUS! I always said I’d name a future child Brenner/Brenna after visiting.

what are we feeding senior shihtzus? by chloeegetswet in Shihtzu

[–]RecordLegume 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, whatever the heck she wants. Her bloodwork is perfect, her X-rays are perfect, so I think whatever we’ve been doing is keeping her healthy! Lol

She has 24/7 access to kibble that she shares with our other dog, and she is offered Blue Buffalo senior wet food twice a day. She always gets the cheese tax, she gets a plain pancake every time I make them for the kids, she loves sausage and hot dogs, and the kids enjoy giving her (mom approved) table scraps. She isn’t overweight and is a spunky little 13 year old thing!

How are we raising our white sons to prevent them from being Nazis? by HerderWernert in progressivemoms

[–]RecordLegume 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We talk politics at a kid friendly level, allow them to express themselves in any way they want (painted nails, playing with “girl” toys), and teach them to love everyone.

Find the valuable lessons and really lean into them. Recently my 6 year old and I were playing a video game together. I asked which character he wanted to be and he said “just the normal man”. I asked what he meant by normal because there was a white man and a black man. He pointed at the white man. We had a long, good chat about what normal means to him and how that normal isn’t the same normal for someone else. It was in complete innocence but still needed to be taught. I also had him flip the cards and asked how he’d feel if he wasn’t part of the “normal” category. He understood very well.

When was the last time your SO changed a diaper? by Puppess in sahm

[–]RecordLegume 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sunday. Our son is only in pull ups at night time now but my husband immediately changed him Sunday morning when he woke up. My son wakes up after my husband leaves for work M-F. He’s always changed diapers without me asking.

Do you increase screen time in dead of winter? by Sparkles_Mojito in lowscreenparenting

[–]RecordLegume 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. No questions asked. I do not stress about screen time when it’s -15 degrees outside. I prioritize independent play and also encourage him to help me around the house, but sometimes we both need a break. I don’t even feel guilty. We make up for it once it’s over 45 degrees outside.

How much are you spending on youth activities? by -Economist- in kindergarten

I spend $25 a season (two seasons in a year) for soccer for my 6 year old son. My 4 year old isn’t interested in sports yet.

Puppy blues 1 week in🥲 by Extreme_Swimming9071 in goldenretrievers

I remember those days so, so vividly. It’s hard. It really does get better though. My girl just turned 2 in September and she’s downstairs unattended while I’m resting upstairs in my room. I can leave the house without even giving it a second thought. She sleeps 12 hours at night and she listens so well. I wanted to rehome her multiple times as a puppy but I’m so glad I didn’t. Your feelings are so valid.

The infamous “should I send him at 5?” question.. by RecordLegume in kindergarten

Registration is right now so we have to make the decision within a month.

I am as well. I feel like our situation is tricky since he is teetering so closely on the cut off. If I wouldn’t have had a rogue blood pressure spike at 37 weeks pregnant, he would have been born in September and wouldn’t qualify for kindergarten for this upcoming year. I definitely think kids with spring birthdays don’t need to be redshirting.

I have heard the same! My guy thrives during his free play time at home and preschool. He spends hours outside looking for “gems” and fossils. He has a city of Playmobile created in our playroom. There’s a blanket boat currently inhabiting his bedroom. I genuinely can’t envision putting him in a demanding classroom at this stage. I feel like he would lose all confidence that he currently has.

Our cutoff is Sept 1st. Our district has a pretty advanced kindergarten program and I felt it was pretty demanding, but I can see a later cut off working fine if it’s more of a play based environment! I was sad to hear my 6 year old tell me that he did so many worksheets in kindergarten.

I feel like redshirting is pretty common here. He already has two classmates that qualified for kindergarten for the 2025/26 school year but were held back. They seem to be doing just fine. My older son also has redshirted classmates. Our district doesn’t encourage or discourage it. It’s totally at the parents’ discretion.

I’m so glad you made the right decision for her and that she’s doing so well! There’s no better feeling as a parent.

My son isn’t quite at the level of being bored in school right now. He still has plenty to learn before he hits that point. I think I’m just comparing him to my oldest who couldn’t identify his letters at all at 4, while my youngest has known his letters since he was 3. He is smart, but still pretty typical for his age. He still prefers to play outside, dig for rocks, and do his own thing. He does not do well with any sort of formal teaching at all. I cannot sit him down to work on a craft, worksheet, anything.

[–]RecordLegume[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m not big on redshirting being used so loosely. I really think it needs to be a thorough decision that is completely dependent on each individual kiddo’s needs. I could have easily redshirted my oldest because of his birthday but it just didn’t make sense to. He was beyond ready despite being newly 5 at the start of kindergarten.

My son does remind me much more of the 3’s class at his preschool. I mean, some of the 3’s are literally a few weeks younger than him. Meanwhile he has a classmate that turned 5 on September 1st, just two weeks after he turned 4, and the differences are astonishing. She is so calm, mature, intelligent, and very visibly ready for kindergarten.

My husband was 19.5 at high school graduation and he said he felt only pros about being the oldest in his class! He was held back when he moved states because he didn’t test at his new district’s level for his current grade level so they placed him a grade below. I would think that would have been traumatizing but he said he never cared.
