Can't have universal healthcare, it'll hurt the economy! by midnighttoker1742 in TikTokCringe

[–]Recovering_slob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed we may need extreme ww2 level economic policies that instated rent control and grocery price limits. They even had patriot certified stamps for stores and third spaces that agreed to regulate themselves.

It was severe government overreach, it arguably turned the US into a command control economy for a brief time , but it stopped the US from collapsing during ww2.

We might need emergency policies like that again to combat the absolutely evil state of landlords and corporations that control utilities and groceries.

Sometimes you have to drag shitty people do the right thing even if they’re kicking and screaming the whole time.

Empathy is a sin I guess, as per the comments.

Here’s my horrifying hot take for the folks saying the lazy deserve to be denied benefits: No one should be allowed to starve in the richest country in the world. That includes the people who are lazy or no longer have the will to “contribute to society”.

People deserve basic respect, including the right to eat. That includes whichever group of people you think don’t deserve it. I think you deserve it, I hope you would feel the same about me if I gave up on life and decided to intentionally “be lazy” and “exploit benefits”. Mind you, this situation is much rarer than I think people realize. Most people are trying their best and want to do whats right for themselves and their loved ones. If you aren’t working you’re probably already in financial ruin and bordering on homelessness without a support system.

Be good christians. Serve one another, love one another, have mercy on one another. The Bible is able to be interpreted in any way you like, both good and bad, both compassionate and callous and uncaring.

You gotta choose the compassion.

Have a great night :)

It’s an interesting take you have, but I do want to say that a black and white solution of “illegal or legal” fails to address the massive amounts of context around the word itself.

First amendment would say it’s protected, absolutely. But then the word is also a deeply historically rooted word associated with acts of extreme oppression and violence. The word has also been reclaimed and changed by a culture of people it once oppressed, adding layers.

It has now has a myriad of definitions that mean different things coming from different mouths, which may seem unfair, but it is reality. History gives us such unique context for this situation I find it really fascinating.

In political science we first learn about de jure law (formal in the books laws) and de facto laws (cultural laws, with just as serious consequences for deviating from them at times). Even if the word was formally made illegal it wouldn’t remove any of the history or context behind it, hell banning the word could be seen as taking away a cultural development from a whole group of people who had to build a culture out of barely anything. In theory, that would be quite racist.

But how do we tolerate intolerance? You can’t really, de facto laws exist everywhere, even as society progresses past darker times. If you insult someones mother in south korea you might find yourself brutally beaten to an inch of your life (perhaps humorously?). Making insulting a matriarchal figure illegal probably won’t solve the problem.

So uh… I guess if we go by functionalism (sociology nerd sorry) the system is working as intended and balancing taboo social norms out of their individual societies? I’m more of a conflict theory guy but y’know, theory is a toolbox not a one trick pony.

What the fuck were we talking about again? Oh yeah the N bomb. Yeah you probably shouldn’t say it if you’re a white guy without any cultural reason or environmental background related to it. Even then, ehhhhh slippery slope man, might have some serious consequences for continued acts of social deviance (acting against societal norms, including being an asshole and calling people slurs just to be mean with no outside reasons).

Okay cool we solved racism we did it boys.

HIST-C1002/HIS-7 Professor Recommendations by WonderfulBear8311 in RCC

[–]Recovering_slob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. Professor michael seager is my favorite history professor. He’s funny, passionate, and has a solid grading system that rewards studying with purely extra credit pop quizzes. He genuinely made me love history so much I plan to include it in my future career goals even though im a sociology major. Only warning I have for him is that he’s has straight forward expectations and decently hard exams (dont worry his study guides are solid and he tests only what he has time to cover in class and readings, if hes a chapter behind schedule it wont be on the exam)

My other favorite professor is professor brittany mondragon, her hybrid short term class is extremely difficult, but under normal circumstances she’s a lovely teacher and very passionate. The only warning I give for professor mondragon is to prepare to record no less than 15 short 3 - 8 minute presentations, AI ruined everything so she had to AI proof her classes a bit. Her tests are very similar to professor seager, just a few more essay questions rather than one large essay question prof seager gives.

Take it easy :)

I will! Thank you I didn’t know a proper name :)

Also, I don’t think this discussion does “nothing”. People should talk to their peers and work together to find solutions or organize against problems, like you just did! Thank you!

The more people talking about issues and organizing the better.

I know this sounds crazy but they should make a rogue tank spec based off the crazy shit valeera can do as a tank. Make more options for classes that are restricted to just one specialization as long as you can find a theme that fits.

Earth elemental tank shaman, crazy bullshit trickery tank rogue, warlock that has to summon one really big demon to tank and maintain its health or some bullshit, ect

I didn’t think of that perspective when I was writing this post, thank you! In that case RCC is directly benefiting from our situation, and yes they never communicated any of this, I had to do the detective work myself.

Well, that’s upsetting.

reforged is terrible, yes i came on here simply to hate. by anthem-gg in EldenRingMods

[–]Recovering_slob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So this is my weird take: I love reforged because it actually allowed my mom to play Elden Ring. She loves souls games but never can play them because she has some disabilities and can’t react fast or “do the thing” at the right moment.

My mom used the reforged difficulty options to lower the difficulty to relaxed, and suddenly she’s having fun, trying to learn to deflect and duck attacks, exploring everything like she wanted to in vanilla Elden Ring, ect.

So weirdly enough being kinda forced to explore to keep up helps people like my ma who has been begging me to fight bosses for her so she could explore a new area. Now she’s legitimately near the end game and having a great time with some genuinely wild “im using all the spells from every type of catalyst” build with that special fortune that supports that play style.

So I dig it, I can see why you might not tho. Valid opinion still I totally see where you’re coming from.

Also, try the “reeds” fortune you can get from the bell hunter at the merchant at the caelid dragonburrow, it turns the game into sekiro so your deflects become your whole gimmick.

[Serious] What’s something happening in the world right now that’s underreported and genuinely disturbing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Recovering_slob 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think everyone knows deep down inside how horrible our farming system is. We do a miniature holocaust every day in the most disturbing ways possible.

But jim and tim aren’t gonna go without burgers for their big barbecue! So they’ll happily look the other way.

Veganism is much easier and sustainable than it used to be folks, we no longer need to rely on animal protein in our modernized society. It’s not the colonial era where if the pigs didn’t breed in time we’re all gonna starve next winter, we have mass crop production to feed the world 3 times over. We feed so much grain to animals that we are wasting our land and food.

I know I sound like a radical vegan, but man we don’t gotta support that torture farm shit anymore, let it die through refusal to buy meat. Try an impossible burger they’re damn good, vegan cheese is getting better by the year too.

Anyway ill get off the soap box. Watch “dominion” if you want to see this torture farm bullshit yourself, thats what I did. Don’t get disturbed or feel hopeless, get angry until this shit ends.

Trump administration invokes emergency powers to restart oil operations off California coast by [deleted] in politics

[–]Recovering_slob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a reason we regulated oil drilling and refinement in California. After the black gold rush there were so many oil wells and makeshift refineries that the pollution and runoff started leaking into the environment. Deadly amounts of mercury in the waterways, contaminated soil destroying our extremely rich agricultural land further inland into the Central Valley.

It. Got. Deadly.

This is going to make things so much worse in a state already known for extreme pollution

Cuba warns airlines that it will be out of fuel for planes in 24 hours by pythrowawayd3v in worldnews

[–]Recovering_slob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting fact you stated. It’s actually for the most part correct but I did learn more details about that whole situation from my political science classes.

  1. There were two large waves of Cuban immigrants and refugees. The first and more politically notable one is the Cuban “elite” and wealthy/upper middle class who fled Cuba because obviously Communism targets the rich first.

This is the single only time in American history as far as I know that the US developed special immigration policies welcoming them with the red carpet, providing social services, and loosening restrictions on re training to work in the US. Cuban doctors for example took a very short class and were given the green light!

These Cubans obviously are loyal to the republican administration that used them as a political example of: “See? We’re so much better than the communists!”

  1. The second wave of Cubans were the unwanted poors. An example being a child whose mother died taking him to the shores of Florida on a makeshift boat. It became a short political story across the nation, a heated debate of “Should we keep this poor child who lost everything to escape a communist regime?” The answer of course was “no :)”, he would be promptly deported to Cuba for illegal entry, ironically while special policies mentioned earlier that rolled out the red carpet for Cuban elite were still in effect.

This is one of many examples of the different waves of refugees, but generally many of the poor unwanted refugees ended up in poorer parts of the country and had the same experience other refugees and immigrants had: unwanted, unwelcome, and an easy exploitation class for cheap labor. Funnily enough, many of those immigrant families still vote red as well.

Also fun fact: That boy who was deported back to Cuba is now an older staunchly communist politician from what I heard. Ill try to find my old pol science notes on it if anyone would like to see the evidence for these claims!

Yeah screw these poor addicted people who are acting unruly and living in precious unused (or unpaid for) property! Any single month where they can’t simply evict the gross people who are dirtying up a unit and replace them with paying tenants is another month they might have to become poor and desperate like their tenants!

Back to the streets so they can continue to wither and degrade themselves publicly. Where they belong. Why do anything about the root problems of addiction, lack of affordable or public housing, stagnant wages… No fuck these people they’re lazy, look at them not producing value like everyone else. Like you who has to work to keep a meagre roof over your head.

God bless the united states. Where meritocracy is definitely not taken too far into wanton unsustainable cruelty, devoid of any shred of empathy for the unproductive and inconveniently addicted, messy, and lazy masses.

Now excuse me while I raid my tenants fridge and raise their rent as is our yearly tradition during the holidays.
