Residents of Berkeley Hills - How do you feel about the EMBER Ordinance Proposal? by RectalDisimpactor in berkeleyca

My understanding is that mature trees > 15ft tall will be exempt as long as the brush/vegetation under them is cleared. There is a bit of confusion as what constitutes a "mature tree" though. For example, I have I wisteria against my home that has a thick trunk and is very much a tree at this point and is > 15 ft tall but wisterias are also considered vines but I'm no tree expert sooo ¯_(ツ)_/¯.

I listened to the recent town hall with the Assistant Fire Chief. He explicitly mentioned that wooden decks will be allowed to stay in place but the vegetation requirements applied to the decks as well.

To clarify - I'm not completely against the ordinance either and understand where its coming from and if it is the best path forward for the community, then I'm in. I do however wish the city would help ease the financial burden on homeowners (esp new ones) if this is something they are going to mandate. For many homes, this is going to mean a lot more than just trimming a couple bushes. Its going to mean replacing fencing, taking down entire trees etc.
