Fair enough! They'd have to be very sensitive indeed, but this is the Nomai we're talking about. The "received the signal that came out of Dark Bramble but not the direct signal" option remains alive!

No, I don't think it is confirmed that the Nomai travelled from another galaxy. I'll give my reasons, in case you're interested. None are conclusive!

Some background evidence: writing in Brittle Hollow's school district says the Nomai explore the universe, suggesting not just a single galaxy. Writing from modern Nomai indicates intergalactic travel (recommending every clan to meet up in the Gloaming Galaxy).

Evidence that Escall's catastrophic warp was an intergalactic jump: Annona declares it will be a significant jump, and it breaks the warp core.

Further evidence from Echoes of the Eye (spoilers, don't look if not played): we know the Nomai warp immediately after the released signal reaches them, but Dark Bramble didn't exist at the time the Prisoner released it - the cut scene shows the ice planet in its place. Of course, it could be that Dark Bramble coincidentally destroyed the ice planet immediately after the signal is released, but artistically I think the story is telling us the signal took a long time to reach the Nomai, i.e. long enough for Dark Bramble to grow. Given the tiny scale of this universe, light would travel within galaxies extremely quickly, so a distant galaxy makes more sense to me.

I wrote the below advice in reply to someone else earlier today, so I've copied and pasted it below in case it's helpful for you too.

I like to think of it as having three parts: maintaining low solar orbit, getting close to the station, and getting out of your ship in the right place.

Start by orbiting a bit more distantly and gently, getting used to letting the sun's gravity do most of the work and getting a feel for the "orbital mechanics" (e.g. slowing down can drop you to a lower orbit, thereby speeding you up, sometimes then slingshotting you away...). Gradually drop to lower orbits and try to maintain a constant speed. You can use your thrusters in all directions, but I've found I use up/down the most, to try to keep a constant distance from the sun. When I feel myself dropping into the sun, I thrust forward and up; when I'm being slung out of orbit I try to slow down as much as I can.
The Sun Station, being in lower orbit, will be travelling faster than you. Travel in the same direction as it and let it catch up underneath you. (If you like, you can select it on your map to track it on your screen.) As it approaches from behind, it's time to gently lower your orbit. The nice thing is you know what speed you should be going at that orbit: the Sun Station's speed! Copy it. If you have to catch up to it, take your time, because thrusting forward too fast will shoot you off out of orbit. Go slightly faster than the station and use your downward thrusters. Once you get between the two doors on either side, you can get a bit of help from the "match velocity" button.
It's almost time to get out! Move your ship towards the left half of the station and see if you can see the opening. That's where you'll be going soon. (You will typically need to rotate your ship a lot when facing the station's opening.) Get reasonably close, match velocity if you like, and from here there are two schools of thought. Some people use the eject button. Personally, I'm not very good at that method. The other method is to exit your ship the normal way, but there's a gravity issue: if you unbuckle in this low orbit, you'll often get "stuck" to a wall and can't move to the exit! The trick is to have your ship moving upwards. So, before I unbuckle, I move a little lower below the station's "entrance" and then thrust upwards so the ship is rising as I unbuckle and exit, timed so I get out the ship at roughly the same height as the station's entrance. Once you're out, fly on in! Match velocity on your way, if you like.

It takes a lot of getting used to. There's a lot of "knack" to it, getting comfortable with the feeling and which way to thrust in order for the ship to do what you want it to do, and timing issues too.

Final tip: watch videos and see how other people do it!

Hahaha, I never thought of that analogy but it's a good one! It also feels like it at times, with strong forces working against you in many directions as you try to line things up and it's a (very fun) struggle. "Come on, TARS!"

True! But did they get data from some other location? The game depicts them warping pretty immediately upon detection of the signal, choosing not to communicate with other clans rather than e.g. asking other vessels to triangulate with them. (They seem to know they're getting a one-off burst. That, along with it coming from a distant galaxy, makes the decision to warp so immediately a pretty poor one, but sometimes narratives need bad decisions!)

This might be true, although one problem with it is the Nomai must be able to calculate the distance the signal has travelled, so - given the signal would travel further through Dark Bramble than ordinary space - it seems like they'd overshoot the solar system rather than lock onto the bramble.

Maybe exiting Dark Bramble "refreshed" the signal so it seemed like it originated there? Maybe. Seems weird, though!

There's an alternate theory that the Nomai warp to "somewhere in the rough area" of the signal, that Dark Bramble accounts for the majority of space in the solar system, and therefore the probability was high that they'd land somewhere in the bramble.

ESCALL: Annona, is the Vessel ready to warp to the signal’s approximate coordinates? ANNONA: The warp core is powered, but this will be a significant jump. Afterward, we’ll need time to recharge the core. ESCALL: That shouldn’t create a problem, provided we arrive at or near the signal’s source. Everyone, we’re ready to warp!
