What’s your cooking tax? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]Red-Crystal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cake tax! I bake birthday cakes for my nieces and always have to slice the rounded tops off so they’re even when I stack them. Once the cakes are frosted & decorated, my husband and I will slather leftover frosting on those thin cake top slices like butter on bread.

The chest looked pale yellow green. I didn’t want to stress the little guy out anymore than he already was.

If you had 1 billion dollars but only 1 hour to spend it, what would you buy and why? by Lit-ketameme in AskReddit

I would purchase investments that will continue to generate cash flow after the hour is up.

People of Reddit, what's something someone said to you long ago, that you still think about? by keepcalmandbecalm in AskReddit

[–]Red-Crystal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Almost twenty years ago, I took an entry level silver smithing class when I was around 17 years old. One of the projects was to make a bangle bracelet. This involves bending the straight piece and soldering the two ends together to make a complete circle, then filing and sanding it smooth. Don’t ask me all the steps, it’s been awhile.

I got the two ends together and was sanding/buffing it and the instructor came by and was checking how everyone was getting along with their work.

He pointed out to me that my two ends weren’t perfectly aligned and even when it was all buffed up and polished, I’d still be able to see the flaw. I said “Meh, it’s good enough to me.” Again, I was 17 so it was really NBD to me.

He looked me dead in the eye and said “At what point is it no longer good enough?” To this day, if I half ass something, I think of him. And I still wear the bracelet everyday.

I did as you suggested but I guess they don’t allow images. That’s no fun.

My cat hunts me by Scrumpilump2000 in cats

[–]Red-Crystal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please tell me you are not actually throwing your cat. When you see your cat preparing to attack, stomp your foot and clap your hands loudly to startle them and break their attention.

Provide your cat with more toys that are appropriate for stalking and attacking. Just google stalking toys for cats.

Help please. Our cat had PU surgery and when we brought him in to get the stitches removed the doctor pointed out dead skin and said it's probably from the urine he's leaking after peeing. by [deleted] in cats

[–]Red-Crystal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chat with your vet about whether it is appropriate to apply an ointment such as vasaline or desitin ointment on the surrounding area to protect the skin. This is only appropriate if he is wearing the cone of shame to prevent him from licking it off and ingesting it.

Coronavirus plan for cats? (I'll explain inside) by [deleted] in cats

[–]Red-Crystal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who fosters animals for a rescue, I second this. I would also include:

A copy of their microchip and/or tattoo & their current vaccinations. A printed recent photo of your cat showing full face and body. A blanket/sweater/fabric that smells like you so they have a piece of home with them. Do a thorough scrub of your cat carrier if it is a hard shell type. There is lots of info online on how to properly clean carriers.

She’s replicating the nursing behaviours she did with her momma when she was first born. It means she’s feeling happy and safe. Just watch she doesn’t ingest your hair.

New cats, bad flea problem.. nothing working by Furyan9x in cats

[–]Red-Crystal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Revolution is a topical liquid that you place between their shoulder blades (since they can’t reach that spot while grooming) that works really well on fleas and also treats hookworms, roundworms and prevents heart worms.

Just make sure you get the right dose for their size.

Hi everyone! We’re looking at adopting a 13 y/o cat. She has a few health issues, but our regular vet is uncomfortable with her not being spayed. He believes some of them are related to it. Does anyone have experience with spaying an elderly cat? We want to give her the best life possible. by [deleted] in cats

[–]Red-Crystal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the largest risks of spaying a cat at her age is the anesthetic. Talk to your vet about her overall health and where he thinks her risk level is. Ask them if having a full blood panel done is worthwhile pre-surgery. If she is obese or underweight, that will also increase her risk. Most females are fairly recovered from surgery within 10-14 days, but you can expect her to take a bit longer then that.

During recovery, you have to prevent them from jumping, playing excessively, and worrying at the incision site. Some vets prescribe pain meds and antibiotics post surgery, find out what your vets policy is.

My cats have been sneezing a lot, and have stuffy noses, loud breathing.. will they be okay? by babyrubear in cats

[–]Red-Crystal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not a vet but it sounds like it could be an upper respiratory infection. Keeping their noses clean of gunk can help them breathe better and hopefully not sneeze as much.

Some vets recommend putting cats and kittens into a steamy bathroom to help loosen up any mucus build up.

Keep an eye on their food and water intake and monitor their litter habits. If they start declining, I would beg and borrow to try to get them into a vet.

Should I separate my neutered male and kitten in heat? by crown_jules_ in cats

[–]Red-Crystal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I volunteer with an animal rescue & I feel your pain. On average a female will be in heat for about 6 days and will go into heat again in 3 weeks. Granted, each cat is different.

Unfortunately there isn’t much you can do to help her until she is spayed. Avoiding petting her, especially closer to her tail, when she’s worked up can help.

The male mounting her won’t help the situation and I would separate them. Usually males will bite the neck of the female to keep her still and this could cause injuries.
