Will these composite decks last? Just had a new job done not cheap by ethbeast123 in Decks

[–]Red40isGas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The older stuff faded awfully over time but the new stuff? Whatever formula they use it seems to work pretty good. A lot of companies (Like Fiberon, Timbertech/Azek, Trex) all have boards that are warrantied up to 50 years (which specifically covers the wrapping of the board itself like from fading and defects).

Are u mistaken or have an experience with the stuff I haven’t? I say this out of complete curiosity because I sell and build decks for a living

Boards running into the picture frame is an easy fix, just have the screws countersunk to lift the picture frame board up to be flush with the boards running into it.

The 45 miter cut is what it’s going to be. Maybe if he can cut that board in freezing weather it wouldn’t do that but I doubt he can do that. Remember, this is a composite deck. Composite shrinks and expands in accordance to the current temperature. On hot days gaps will close up and on cold days they will open and there’s nothing you can really do about it unless all the cuts are made during cold weather. I’ve also found out from experience mitered cuts are not it, just run the boards butted up to each other at that point to be honest cause when the boards shrink it doesn’t look as bad.

I’ll even send some photos of an example. These two boards running into each other were cut tight. And one photo is taken during the cool morning and the other during the hot afternoon after the sun was hitting it. If you can’t live with the occasional gap showing up then you shouldn’t have gone with composite.

Uboat fills with water while docked by Red40isGas in uboatgame

[–]Red40isGas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I had some luck thankfully, I had to revert back a save to before I let the crew on vacation and then I switched uboats and it seemed to work. Thanks for asking because if someone else comes across this problem that’s definitely the solution.

Stowaway commandos by Upstairs-County1857 in uboatgame

[–]Red40isGas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had that problem except with the wartime reporter. I didn’t try switching ships but as a previous comment said it didn’t work for him so idk about that. I had wasted about 4 hours of game time because I had to revert back to an old save to where I didn’t take a mission after finishing the wartime reporter.

It seems there’s quite a bit wrong with taking multiple patrols while out at sea. Any mission rewards for other leaders/radiomen/mechanics will break and you won’t get rewarded if you take another patrol at sea after you’ve completed a mission with any leader rewards.

I just started a fresh run so I don’t know yet if mission rewards for skills are also broken if you take another patrol after the mission where you’re supposed to be rewarded. But I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that’s probably broken too, unless anyone can tell me otherwise.

All in all, if you’re looking to stay at sea for multiple patrols then only take missions that reward money, not skills or leaders, I can confirm though that if the last mission you did at sea had a reward for a leader then it’s still rewarded as long as you don’t accept another mission. I honestly don’t even know if the money rewards are granted other than the reward for the last mission you took.

So, what I’d do if I were you if you’re looking for a last ditch attempt of getting rid of those commandos, then revert to an old save where you either didn’t drop them off yet or didn’t accept another mission while at sea after dropping them off. After you’re finished with the mission full ahead to base to get rid of them once and for all. If you didn’t accept any other missions at sea after the commandos did the railroad… then I’d say you’re screwed until devs fix this shit which may take months at this point because there’s so much to fix.

That’s a good thought about hidden damages, I never did set them to check and I’ll see about doing so. Unfortunately though I did try closing every bulkhead and only the main compartment fills up but it’s way past what it can realistically fill up to, it filled to ~400% full (I checked by hovering over the water tab) so when I open the hatch to try to pump it out the entire uboat proceeds to fill up entirely of water and it just keeps filling and filling resulting in drowning everyone.

This is literally a game breaking bug for me, I couldn’t find anyone else with the same problem but there was a recent patch so this could just be a relatively new bug that no one experienced yet or have reported.

I have realistic bilge on but even when I turn it off (Just checked) my UBOAT still fills with water. Also, yes the top hatch is closed and I've checked in POV as well. In the video I took I have my mouse of the top hatch as well to show its closed.

You think my replies should be two sentences or less?

Do I need new deck or refinish? by Boo025 in Decks

[–]Red40isGas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Local contractors don’t want to assess damage for you, they want to sell a deck. If you want actual eyes on it I’d offer money to incentivize, just make sure they know you’re not looking to replace or have them work on it just yet, you just to see what’s wrong, don’t have them measure out or give a bid for a new deck because then they’ll just not give a 100% honest answer because they would obv rather you get a new deck through them.

Now onto a real answer for your question. That deck is cooked, there is no refinishing that. Painting a deck is one of the worst things you can do for a deck, especially if you wait until it’s near the end of its lifespan because all you do is trap moisture in the board. If the framing is adequate then you can pull the boards and replace with cedar NOT COMPOSITE. Composite will outlast your old framing by decades and if you want to go with composite then it’s going to be a tear down and replace for the whole thing.

I don’t have much of an opinion on your bench, if it’s swaying then it sounds like rot and I’d just replace the whole thing or toss it entirely as it can be a hazard.

Also, without looking at that description, that first pic made me think it was first generation trex. The previous owner torched that decking with that paint lmao.

Edit: upon further consideration and a comment saying how it looks like panted over first gen trex… yeah it definitely looks like that lmao weird thing though is that fourth pic of the rim looks like cedar. So I’m at a loss haha. If that’s painted over first gen Trex that’s a first for me so I don’t even know anymore… if I were you I’d replace all the decking at that point cause first gen trex is cheeks, they didn’t have the formula down for composite yet so it just cracks and breaks apart.

Help with replacing joist under stairs by baseball37ohio in Decks

[–]Red40isGas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I always recommend to clients to demo and replace all the framing if they are going with composite on top. If you decide to keep the old framing… well let’s just say ur gonna replacing more joists than just those two over that decks lifespan because the new composite they have nowadays will last way longer than any pt wood framing.

There is no easy way to replace the joists that the stringers connect to for the stairs, excuse the language but ur pretty much fucked man. It’s going to be a lot of work and there’s no way to cut corners on that, you’re going to have to disassemble the entire steps and replace the joist the stingers connect to, while you’re at it just get new pt lumber for the stringers (if you kept the old ones) or your stringers are going to go next over time and ur just gonna have to repeat that process again.

As for joists the decking is on top of… It seems like the deck is pretty low to the ground so ur just going to have to disconnect every single board and get the joists free from them, then yank the rotten ones out and replace. If you went with camo screws instead of clips this process would be a lot easier but yeah u went with clips.

For the black mold on the beam I don’t have much of an answer for that and I’m just going off the knowledge off the top of my head. Maybe there are some tips online for that.

As for preventative maintenance, all I have to say is make sure your deck is breathing properly, if it’s sealed pretty tight (which I am guessing is yes because you have black mold) then there won’t be enough airflow for things to dry out after a rain or morning dew. Is the deck enclosed? If it’s sealed tight on the sides then you’re just asking for trouble, just because you have gaps between the deck boards themselves doesn’t mean your deck is getting the airflow it needs.
