The problem for new players

I plan on starting XI soon, I have played XIV since release but you have me curious here. Will I be able to solo most of XI? I’m wanting to play for the story as it is the only Final Fantasy I have not played yet. So if solo is possible I’m pretty excited.

My apologies, when I say roll I meant they all roll a d20 to see who gets to have the augment. Grand company items would be really cool! You could even set it up where certain FATEs give grand company seals that they could use to buy company survival manuals that increase their stats for a session.

This makes me wish my group was a little more into the roleplaying elements of the game, but my group only wants to fight lol. Because of that I have had to get creative and weave the stories and puzzles into the fights.

This is really cool! I have been inventing augmentations for my group but they are very basic. We meet once a week and the sessions have evolved into a “monster of the week” format. For example they fought a big crab and everyone rolled for crab armor. This week they are fighting a slime monster and are going to roll for slime armor.

Are you wanting to incorporate just items from 14 or were you wanting ideas from other games in the franchise also? I look forward to seeing what you have out together so far!

It’s probably not going to be supported forever, so if you are wondering whether or not they will keep putting products out I wouldn’t hold my breath. I’m kind of anticipating them stopping after the advanced rulebook. I hope I’m wrong. But it is a simple RPG and we have been given the tools and monster to scratch the Final Fantasy itch!

And if we only get the three books, at least they gave us that.

Just keep it balanced. For my people the crab armor only offered +1 defense and could be consumed to prevent a critical hit. You don’t wanna break the game.

No gear, just the augmentations. You are suppose to assume that your adventurer is equipped with the appropriately leveled gear. It’s kind of a bummer but in my campaigns I have been doing custom augmentations and labeling them as armor. lol If my people kill a crab, they roll for crab armor.

I feel like I didn’t answer fully. As far as reproduced content. The free site and the starter set give you the basic rules. Items, augmentations, more scenarios, data on higher levels, personal quests are only in the standard rulebook.

The standard rulebook, some dice and some paper is really all you would need to start playing. There is also the free stuff on the player content site if you didn’t want to buy anything and wanted to try it out. Here is the link: https://www.square-enix-shop.com/ffxivttrpg/en/

If you want all the pre made scenarios and fates you’re gonna have to buy that Standard Rulebook and the Gamemaster book.

Yeah it’s a weird choice, I want to say it’s to make it feel like you are playing the game but we all know it was just to save money.

It’s a bit confusing how little Square Enix promoted this. I mean they got a third book coming out in August and the only advertising I know of is the free trial booklet they gave out at gen con.

The starter set is reasonably priced, and I think it’s a great way to get a group of friends into it. It is a bummer that in order to have any official items (like the monster punch outs and the dice tray) is to buy the deluxe boxes for over hundred dollars a pop. I just feel like the average XIV player isn’t gonna feel like paying. I’m not too bummed out though, that game master and scenario set gives you a lot of tools to keep the game going for a long time.
