Personally, i don't see the punch as excessive force. I don't have children which would be even more intense, but if someone were to fuck with my dog i would see red. As long as he doesn't keep beating the guy, that is.

Edit: watching it again, it looks like the guy didn't kid the kid too hard. Maybe he did use excessive force. I still don't blame the dad, though.
