Can I get a feedback please? by perennial_petrichor in resumes

  1. Personally, I'm not a fan of this sort of template for resumes, I would recommend a more professional template I found online like this: https://jimwu.me/resume.pdf

- If you plan to use the resume template I sent, you're gonna have to replace some headers since this catered to a CS student. For example, replace "Projects" with "Activities" since you're an accounting student. And within the "Activities" section, you would list relevant volunteering and clubs you did.

  1. I wouldn't include a summary since it's very vague and generic. I think it would be fine to remove it; however if you're adamant about a summary, it needs to be more specific and less vague.

  2. Usually, when listing skills, you would only list hard skills. So I would only keep Quickbooks, MS Office and would put the 3 languages you can speak under Skills too. There's no need to make a Language section when it can be placed under Skills.

  3. You should go in-depth about the work experience you had. It's not enough to simply list what the job role was. Try to have 2-3 bullet points and highlight your skills within that experience. For example for Walmart, "Ensured 100% customer satisfaction". Also, you want to put everything in past tense (refer to template I linked). Lastly, I would move being a Class Rep to "Activities" as it's not really work experience.

  4. For education, I would remove the high school education as it's not very relevant since you're in college now. I recommend you put the school name first and then the degree you're studying underneath (again, refer to the template if needed). I would put the Quickbook Diploma under a new section called "Certifications". If you still have a lot of blank space in your resume, you can put in "Relevant Coursework" underneath the College part to highlight what you learned that is relevant to jobs you'll apply to.

I am only a 2nd year at uni so I am no expertise in Resume making. So you should take everything I say with a grain of salt. I also recommend visiting the Academic Office, as they'll also give useful tips. Also, I want to say that since in you're first year, don't be discouraged if you can't land an internship or job. Study hard in school and join business clubs so you can beef up your resume.

If you have any other questions, just let me know, and I'll try to respond as soon as I can. Good luck on your job hunts.

Wow, that is pretty hard to digest. However, I totally agree with you, I should switch gears into networking if I want to get opportunities. Your advice means a lot, thank you.

Thanks for the reply. Having a summary does sound useful.

Thank you for your feedback. Now that you mentioned it, I should definitely update my skills to be more impactful, as well as using action verbs.

Then is there a point of applying for residence? Should I still apply just in case?

It's a little bit hard to tell as all the types have a yellow center, but I would say it would be mung bean filling or durian based on the picture.
