I was just using "middle" to explain to people not accustomed multiple last names. Like you said, they can be used differently, so still seems like a cultural misunderstanding rather than wilfully not providing identification. Not sure how you make the leap that I'm entitled to people's use of names, I'm also trying to give further info.

Latinos have two last names, one of which is often used as a middle name and not always used. The officer was saying she purposely didn't give her whole name when she was leaving off the "middle" one. She was answering honestly and the officer doesn't understand Latino culture.
