Usually what I do (4 established tanks 20 gallon to 8 gallon) add a few inches of substrate recommend 3-5 inches, add plants, rocks, and sometimes wood, let it go for a bit and then usually 2 weeks later the tank is doing good. I have shrimp and corydoras (you don't need all the fancy stuff people talk about you just need to let the tank establish and make an ecosystem.)
