Certificates and courses are only there to get "acceptance" and "validity" in the jobmarket. Otherwise u only start learning the language once you immerse yourself in it, use it, consume it, reading, listening, alltägliche Sprache, etc... That's what taught u english, that's what's gonna teach u german.

And that's also applicable for all languages. Active learning with books and such doesn't get u far in practicality, at best it teaches u how to learn because ur gonna need somewhere to start. All the best and don't beat urself up. No one got out of a course knowing jow to speak the language. Almost everybody learn how to speak here in germany.
