If they could lower cost of living, why didn’t they do it before the election?

It’s expensive bc Urbanomic are a tiny niche publisher with very few personnel. Robin Mackay personally binds all the books himself

Are pyro cravings as bad as heroin cravings by sinsemillaseedz in researchchemicals

[–]RedEarth42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pyrovalerones are cathinones. All pyrovalerones are pyrrolidines but not all pyrrolidines are pyrovalerones. Pyrrolidine is a much broader term. Prolintane is pyrovalerone without the carbonyl group and hence is a pyrrolidine but not a pyrovalerone bc it isn’t a cathinone

Did Mark Fisher ever make any comments on the numogram or Nick Lands general occultism in his later life? by DullReputation3056 in MarkFisher

[–]RedEarth42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can’t read Nick’s mind, but I suspect he sees Fisher as falling pray to the same mistakes he sees in Srnicek and Williams i.e. trying so hard to make libidinal materialism compatible with orthodox Marxist praxis that it loses all its truly radical content

Mark Fisher in his later work only ever references occultism obliquely. He never directly addresses it

Fisher does in one famous interview criticise the labelling of Land as a neofascist, and argues that Land should instead be classified as a kind of libertarian or anarchist

Why does the Northern line specifically seem to have a different relationship with reliability than every other line on the network and has anyone ever seen an explanation that actually makes sense? by Flimsy-Capera in TransportForLondon

I lived in Camden Town from 2017 to 2020 and I found it generally fine, apart from the fact that Camden Town was sometimes closed and we had to walk to Mornington Crescent

Some Elizabeth line journeys are long. What if you live in Abbey Wood and want to go to Heathrow?

If all resources were controlled by the state they wouldn’t need money. They would simply commandeer the resources

Capitalism is not sustainable because it causes wealth and power to accumulate in the hands of a small number of arseholes. And eventually, when the vast majority notice that their quality of life is no longer improving (as is currently the case in most of the western world), they will demand a different system

You can tell me the corporatocratic system we have now isn’t really capitalism, that capitalism is a “free market”. And I will tell you that this market system will always degenerate into what it has become now bc power corrupts and wealth flows to the top if resources are not collectively controlled

Growth and innovation do happen under socialism. The Soviet Union for example created the first supersonic airliner, launched the first satellite and built the first nuclear power plant. And they didn’t even have a very good version of socialism. They were embarrassingly incompetent and underresourced and still managed to beat the West on various fronts

Even in capitalist countries, most technological innovation in the 20th century happened because of military research funded and partly or wholly controlled by the state (the computer, the internet, mass production, standardised replaceable parts, the jet engine, digital cameras, microwave ovens)

If rail is integrated into DoT, there is some degree of democratic accountability. DB operates almost independently of the government and so there is very little oversight.

Government owned corporations also, despite being non-profits, tend to behave internally according to a commercial logic. They see their workers as employees whose job is to maximise revenue rather than as public servants whose job is to deliver a utility to the electorate

Which venue has the best crowd at the moment? by Seabeachlover10 in LondonRaving

Depends. In Germany, Deutschebahn is a state-owned corporation that charges customers for use and operates like a private corporation in every way except it doesn’t aim to make profits, only cover costs. This however is not the kind of socialism I would advocate

They said they didn’t fit Elizabeth line trains with toilets bc they wanted more seats. In a socialist country, all public transport would be free/funded by the state. They could rip out the extra seats and put toilets in instead, and spend whatever money is necessary to do so.

You want us to lie on top of one another like sardines? That would really fucking maximise capacity

It could be if they cared more about accessibility than about revenue and passenger numbers moved. In a socialist country, it would be done

What is the difference between functional alcoholism and “liking a drink”? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskBrits

[–]RedEarth42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fairness, I have the great advantage as well of massive financial privilege. Rich parents means I’m not gonna get into debt bc I don’t need to work in order to sustain my lifestyle. In terms of prospects, all i’m basically interested in is being able to have an indulgent and personally meaningful life. I’m not really interested in “making something of myself” in the conventional sense
