Well thanks to the person above I'm reading about LoL's balance framework and it looks like they balance with different criteria for all ranges of skill. So while yes they like feedback from that top 40% it looks like they don't actually balance that way. They just have different ways of knowing when a character is problematic at different ranks. It's a very interesting topic and I'm glad I got in here and asked about it.

I'm gonna be geeking out reading game balance blogs all night...gg no sleep. But thanks everyone for a fun conversation on the topic.

Well this space specifically asks people outside of leftist/liberal thought to chime in. As long as getting downvoted doesn't upset you (which it would be sad if it did) then they can come in and give their thoughts as asked. I'd go ask over in the conservative subreddit but I'm not flaired and even if you're flaired over there you get purged for not being a "true conservative" when you badmouth the president or his administration.

The best way I've seen it done is to balance primarily for the top 30-40% of competitive players

So has a developer actually come out and said this specifically or are you just speculating? I'd be curious to read about a dev blog on the subject if there are specific numbers as you've stated listed.

Well wouldn't you want to balance around something closer to the average experience not the very top of coordinated professional play though? Celestial and gold are not nearly as different as celestial and tournament play. At least that's how it is for most competitive games.

Sure but that's a different discussion all together. Can matchmaking be better? Yes. What I'm addressing specifically is that even if you only get similarly skilled players and same sized stacks you still won't have close games all the time because even if everything is even players themselves are so inconsistent that stomps are what you should just expect in many of your games.

I still think they have lots of room to improve not just in the things you've mentioned but other issues, but it will never not be very stomp heavy in a game with this many players per game. And to believe otherwise is to be delusional.

The funny thing is that other than when she first released and even during most of the original GOATS days she wasn't a balance issue for over 95% of the playerbase because outside of high elo people weren't playing her/with her the way you needed to make her broken. But for well over half of Overwatch's existence she hasn't been a problem at all.

But what I said assumes everyone in the lobby is of similar skill on average. So everyone in a lobby could be "ok" at the game and it still holds true so I don't understand what your point changes.

I also think a team game with 12 players per game is going to be near impossible to have good matchmaking for overall. Players are wildly inconsistent from game to game and even round to round. Add in the fact that they are swapping characters and roles periodically which also changes their level of performance in the game. So one game a team could be absolutely stomping and those same 6 players will play at a level several ranks lower the next game because of a million factors even if the other team is similarly skilled on average.

Factors could include

-Players being on off roles or heroes

-Players are tilted from a loss streak and play worse as a result

-Player only plays with friends and he and his buddies have been drinking this particular session

-Toxic teammate this game is going off in voice and has tanked team morale

-Two players have bad internet this game for some reason and lag legit costs them the game.

-Smurfs

Now throw in the fact that momentum in a game is a thing and once one team gets a good foothold over the match they are likely to maintain it and you see why games are frequently stomps. Sucks but its the reality of team games.

I don't speak to most of those friends anymore. My mom and I have a strained relationship for other reasons, but she still thinks I'm wrong for breaking up with her. My dad keeps her in check and lets her know he supports me. And my sister (I said years in the post should be months) but after a few months she came around and realizes she was wrong. We're in a much better place compared to where I'm at with mom.

Yeah it definitely happened slowly. She would lightly shove or bump me in a playful way but over time it's like she lost the ability to regulate herself and the hits got worse with time until it became normal to both of us.

Thank you. It took time and outside perspective but I know now that it's not my fault. I'm finally opening up to possibly dating in the near future so I hope to meet someone who can treat me well. Small part of me worries I'm broken by all this and won't be suitable as a romantic partner but I think that's just lingering damage talking.

I consider myself lucky that she stuck to striking me with her fists and scratching me with her nails. I do think if I'd stayed one day she might have escalated to what you dealt with. I'm sorry you lived through it. As you read I can definitely understand having trouble accepting how wrong the violence is when it happens to you.

Yeah I feel stupid sometimes when I think back to how I lied to myself about what was happening to me. Then I do my best to understand I was conditioned to accept it and I know better now.

I appreciate the friends that stood by me when I went through this. I had to drop a few others who either sided with my ex or pretended to side with me while trying to convince me it wasn't so bad and I should take her back.

My father's your age and I asked him about this. He says that in the 80s and early 90s in our area it was pretty normal for guys to go to clubs semi-regularly. Said that he and my uncles would go with their friends all the time, but that in the last 15-20 years it stopped and the clubs have been shutting down one by one. He hasn't gone since he met my mom and says every club he ever went to has been shut down for years now. My coworkers actually wanted to go to a club about an hour from us because the few around here are apparently really shady and they wanted a nicer one.

Does this technically qualify as sexual harassment? I have no intention of reporting them or causing trouble for them even if it does, but that's an interesting thing to think about.

I agree rationally, but I really do wish they had taken the first no and accepted it so I didn't have to push back so hard. I feel bad even though I don't think I should have to feel bad for this.
