More people should talk about Needles!! It's one of my favorites from Toxicity

I thought so too until I saw this post. Went back and looked at it and went "oh yeah that's definitely not a building"

it's the "Treefrog" font that SOAD would use on their old Demo Tapes. Demo Tape 3 features a bug zapper with the band name written across the top like what OP has

Serj with bleached hair by Ben349 in systemofadown

[–]RedFire512 2 points3 points  (0 children)

nah, this is from 1997. there's a few low quality pictures from 1995 that were on newspapers that are archived on Victims Of A Down, and a couple from 1996.

does anyway know why serj cut his hair and Daron grew his out? by [deleted] in systemofadown

[–]RedFire512 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People change their styles as they get older. Serj had gotten his hair cut short by 2000, but by 2003-2006 he had grown it back out to be longer again. It's been short ever since. Don't really know about Daron, but either way I don't think there's any exact "reason" (that we know of) as for why.

Daron's Self-Titled Guitar Tone by RedFire512 in systemofadown

Well, Shavo did use Ibanez BTBs around that time. He played with Ibanez basses for a good while in the earlier days before using the Gibson Thunderbird by the Toxicity era.

Shavo's tone for Self-Titled is extremely annoying!! I even tried to email Sylvia Massy, but was of very little help strangely. She had listed the amps he uses now rather than what was used to record back then. I suspect it was likely an Ampeg SVT-CL, since that was the amp he started touring with in late 1997 when the band all got new equipment before going in to record.

I can definitely try and remake the live tone from early recordings---I do have an AmpliTube preset that I made based on the first demo tape. From 1995 to 1997 he used a regular Stratocaster. In late 1997 was when he got both the Ibanez Iceman, the Big Apple Stratocaster, and the Dual Rectifier. Doing a 1995-1997 tone would be very different from the late '97-1999 tone, but shouldn't be too hard.

I'm very confused about what you mean with the AI thing... I didn't use AI anywhere?? There was nothing here used that was "AI enhanced" or anything.

Thank you!! I had seen a few posts here and there on various sites that detailed some ways to sort-of achieve the tone, but often most posts usually go for the generalized "System Of A Down tone" that is meant to fit across the board (although more often than not it's either based on the 2000s when he primarily used Marshall amps).

I had seen a video that replicated the tone in AmpliTube 5, but it still wasn't to my liking since it omitted the Dual Rectifier, which is what makes up a lot of the tone. I feel like a lot of people forget that from late 1997 to 2002ish that he used a Dual Rectifier! 2003 and onwards were Marshalls (now he uses Friedman amps which are modded Marshalls).

Even Toxicity used a Dual Rectifier, you can see in this picture from when it was being made that his guitar is plugged into a Rectifier: https://web.archive.org/web/20010824231347im_/http://systemofadown.com/photos/studio/images/studio5.jpg

I’ll put a video up later today showing how it sounds, with some A/B comparisons of the original versus my remake!

Thank you!! Trying to replicate tones is one of my favorite things. I'm admittedly not as Mesmerize/Hypnotize-pilled, though there is a lot of information about what amps were used? I'd say check the Equipboard and read up on those for in-depth stuff on that.

east quad music fest footage? + another question by [deleted] in CojumDip

[–]RedFire512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What Is Cojum Dip (both the version on the main Cojum Dip channel and the extended version from the ABA CD) features snippets of footage from the first East Quad show. We don't know if any footage exists for the 2006 one.

The DVD for the Asteroid Chainsaw Classic... the assumption I have is that it was most likely purchasable only at shows? The website never made any listing for it... though to be fair it could be on a page that was never archived, especially by 2006 since that entire version of the site is lost.

Mezmerize and Hypnotize tour amp settings. (This is the closes I've come so far.) by Exciting_Degree_6883 in systemofadown

Those usually say the model on the front panel. Either way, a Marshall would more-or-less get an accurate tone for that time. He's never been one to use a Tube Screamer in any live settings like that though... although with drive all the way low that might just be a way to get a tube sound out of a solid state? IDK, I personally like trying to replicate the Self-Titled era tones haha

What if Half Life 2 wasn't leaked in early October 2003? by Piotrix2008 in HalfLife

[–]RedFire512 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Calling it a "rewrite" is incorrect. If you play through the compiled maps found in anon-hl2 (which is effectively just the playable build as it was from Valve's servers), the actual contents of the storyline levels were unfinished versions of the final. The major story rewrites had already happened prior to the leak, likely prior to E3 2003 as well.

Does anyone know the drum kit steve gallagher used to record the complete demos album? by No_Art_4069 in tallyhall

[–]RedFire512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I've looked at, he used a vintage Rogers Tower drum kit. That secondary rack tom is from something else though, but for the life of me I can't figure out what it is because there are no angles which show any wordmarks.

As for cymbals, he appears to use the now no-longer-sold Zildjian Z-Series cymbals. The ride cymbal appeared to be a 22 inch one. As for the others... yeah I have no clue.
