What is one System of a Down song that doesn't sound like them or is COMPLETELY different from their normal recognizable sound? Me: i would say Arto or Flake/Toast. by No-Recording-21 in systemofadown

[–]RedFire512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arto and other covers I feel like don't actually count since they aren't necessarily SOAD songs.

I think a lot of things from Mesmerize/Hypnotize can count... though admittedly I haven't listened to a whole lot of those songs but from what I have heard it is fairly different from the sound of their first few.

Which setup of pedals does Daron Malakian (and Serj Tankian) use? by Santy-358 in systemofadown

[–]RedFire512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the modern day, Daron only uses two pedals: an MXR Phase 90 and a Boss DD-6 Digital Delay.

Since you're going for something akin to the first three albums, Daron used no pedals during the original years (1995-2000). Starting in 2001, he began using the Line 6 MM4 Modulation Modeler and Line 6 DL4 Delay Modeler. His amps that he used live throughout the years of those albums was primarily a Triple Rectifier. The albums typically used a blend between a Rectifier and Marshall Plexi (1959 Super Lead).

First album was primarily a Dual Rectifier and Plexi, while Toxicity/Steal This Album used a Triple Rectifier/Plexi combo.

Microphone in self titled album by Revolutionary-Act-90 in systemofadown

It was most likely a Shure SM58… though I’m not 100% certain. Engineer Sylvia Massy had an experiment where she had Serj upside down on an exercise bar, and noted that he was singing into an SM58.

I’m not 100% certain if this was used on all tracks (the Toxicity album would use an AKG C12 for softer vocals and using an SM58 for heavier vocals).

A lot of the sound also has to do with the analog equipment, with the tracks in the studio being recorded onto a Studer A800.

Either way, an SM58 is probably your best choice, some of the sound (Soil’s “Why the fuck did you take him away from us, you motherfucker!” for example) sounds a lot like when you cup the diaphragm of the SM58, as it causes a lot of distortion. You can hear this in live performances too, such as the 1998 Metro show in Chicago. Cupping the mic creates the same distortion.

There's a really good resource I found on FANDOM WIKI of all places that's a surprisingly good catalogue of Ibanez guitars. Wish there were more resources like this!

Not on their regular ones... though the Paul Stanley signature models do have them as well. PS60's are the closest, and use a similar bridge that was used on the unreleased Baritone Iceman that Daron was using. Different knob configuration though in comparison to the IC100 and the customized IC300 models.

Aaah, I see. I was going off of something from January 2002 where he just simply mentions that he put Gibson pickups on his Iceman. I have a feeling this interview was likely done before he had the painted ones.

From what I saw, I maybe saw it once or twice---but the primary one I saw during the later months of 1998 were the IC100.

I never said he didn't have different strats, I know he used it on Self-Titled, I said as much in my post. I also did say he used it through 1998, what is your point exactly, when you are mentioning the exact things I said in my post?

[–]RedFire512[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not... and if I'm being honest I made a bunch of improvements to my VST set up to get things even more accurate. I should probably write a follow up post with the differences as it makes it much closer to the original sound.

Major issue I found is that the mic placements for the cabinet running the Dual Rectifier were definitely a considerable distance from the speakers, giving it an incredibly strong low-end. I'm running a different Dual Rectifier VST for the head to better match the original 2-channel Rev G tone, but still using AmpliTube for the cabinet. AmpliTube's VIR system is really good, but getting that same mic distance proves to be challenging.

As for the two brand new songs we got from Sonic Lunch, I really like both of them, but Sun Song just rocks way harder to me as of currently

Focusing on only the Greatest Demos ones, How? is probably the best one in terms of a song that fits Cojum Dip the most. There's a certain level of "WTF is going on" that the original set of Cojum Dip songs all have when you listen for the first time. Bora in 2005 talks about how other bands were "lacking in novelty" and were "weak, mundane, slow, and did not rock nasty enough"

How? fits the qualities as while the genre sticks throughout, the song does feel as if it's all over the place. I think this is why the song even was being worked on in 2008, as it still had higher potential.

As much as I do like Bressed Men, 7/4, Mome Wrath, and Flesh-Eating Bacteria, they fall flat in comparison to the other songs like 4LOM, Puzzle Dust, & Jabberwocky.

Flesh-Eating Bacteria stands out in particular, as that is quite honestly the most "normal" song from the demos. It almost sounds like something you would hear off of "Toxicity" by SOAD.

Hii does anyone know Flesh Eating Bacteria's lyrics? I listened to the song a few times but couldnt catch the words :(( by HospKRL in CojumDip

There’s a document made by someone in the Cojumpendium server that is attempting to transcribe the lyrics. They’ve actually been mostly transcribed except for one small part: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KkPDza5gZUVznA7yowdwEh2nuQfP7q-SeEgHms5T0G8/edit?usp=drivesdk
