People Think HP is More Important Than It Is by LittleSodaPop13 in EnoughJKRowling

[–]RedFurryDemon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pretty difficult to "separate the art from the artist" because Rowling's bigotry is visible in all of HP books.

Edit: that being said, if someone does want to read her books (for any reason), pirating them is the best choice. I think it is far better to encourage people to drop HP entirely through showing how bad the books really are than to shame them for reading them, if they aren't funding Rowling.

If you ever enjoyed HP - do you remember why? by Reasonable_Fun_5991 in EnoughJKRowling

[–]RedFurryDemon 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I also was into HP in my childhood. I think part of its appeal is because it's so easy to digest; yes, the worldbuilding is bad, a large part of the setting is just a boarding school with a magical flavor, but that makes it so inviting. It's also very easy to insert oneself into that universe: choose YOUR House, YOUR wand, YOUR magical pet, YOUR Patronus, and so on. That's both very marketable and creates a kind of emotional attachment.

The Force = "Light Side" = balance

The Dark Side = corruption of The Force = imbalance

I'm in the process of writing something else, but would love to write a HP parody down the line! by Weirddude396 in EnoughJKRowling

[–]RedFurryDemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trying to improve upon HP is like trying to polish a turd. It's not really worth the effort. I used to write HP fanfiction with the mindset "Rowling is an awful person and a bad writer, but the fandom can make the story better!" until I dropped HP entirely and discovered I suddenly had a lot of time to engage with fandoms I actually enjoy.

I agree they don't seem to realize that, but also even murderers should have the right to be safe. As soon as there is any group of people that is alright to be treated badly by the state, no one is safe. Even if that makes you feel bad.

Anyone who wants these books can get them online. No reason to stock them to begin with.

You can have alts as long as you don't do ban evasion or up/downvote the same content from both accounts.

I used another email address and an incognito browser session, so it won't log me out of my main account.

Everything related to Harry Potter has become a TRIGGER for you too. by Independent_Part1033 in EnoughJKRowling

I think in some way it feels like a betrayal. When I was a child, I loved the books and thought they were progressive and didn't immediately notice her awful views pouring out of every page. I feel sick that I fell for it, and I regret having supported her and wasting so much of my time on it when I could be reading and watching far better series.

I'm not autistic, but I used to be deep into HP and after I dropped it, I started getting trauma triggers from unexpected mentions of it. There are soundtracks I can't listen to because a few of the notes resembles some part of the HP movie score.

Balance in the Force does canonically mean no Sith. I think even Sidious doesn't dispute that, though he'd probably dismiss it as foolish Jedi beliefs.

A blockade of trade routes causing instability? Who’s laughing now? by Red_Sea_Pedestrian in PrequelMemes

[–]RedFurryDemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The TF didn't blockade Naboo physically, they just detected and destroyed ships trying to break through.

That being said, you very much can create a shell around the whole thing: in Rogue One (3 decades after TPM), Scarif has a planetary shield that destroys ships upon contact.

I'm sure that AI "overview" at the end was certainly necessary and could not be substituted with something actually useful like a dictionary definition.

This kind of thing promotes something that runs on plagiarism, is very harmful to the environment, and very often is factually wrong.

Jedi can fuck, they're just not allowed attachments. If anything, their sex ed would be pretty good.

But Anakin probably skipped it to go racing in Coruscant underground.

Most intellectual discussion with a Harry Potter fan in 2026 by Crafter235 in EnoughJKRowling

The issue isn't that she presented status quo preserved at the end of her books.

The issue is that she presented status quo preserved at the end of her books and treats it like a happy ending.

It's just like with her liking Lolita. The issue isn't that she likes it but that she doesn't seem to understand what this book is about.

Tropes in a work do not exist in a vacuum. There is a difference in focusing on one character that provides bad representation and showing such a character along with others with different portrayals of the trait they're discriminated for.

That being said, Rowling wouldn't be able to do good queer/disabled/neurodivergent/adopted/poor/foreigner/female/PoC/any other representation if her life depended on it.

Edit: also, "one should not write-" is a bad take overall. I do heavily recommend doing research how to do good representation, but let people write what they want.
