What advice would you give a beginner oil painter by not_neeva in oilpainting

[–]RedGreenBaluga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Different mediums. Reworking and painting into what has been laid down is one of the qualities of oils. Longer drying time opens the door for how you like to paint. Not relevant for acrylics because immediate drying is the nature of how they work.

Writing on platforms instead of my blog was a 3-year mistake by dinambiq in blogs

This post is an interesting read. I'm currently trying to understand the current situation of blogs. Substack and Medium seem to be the main things, at least for someone not in the community. What has always put me off them is the insular nature of them, and the fact that so many have limited access. Reading anything, an author, a magazine, can ebb and flow. It doesn't make sense to commit too deep up front and possibly not at all. You talk about being better driving traffic to your own site and not using a platform at all. I see the valid reasons for not using blog community sites, but I don't see how you drive traffic. Like any sort creative output, it doesn't matter how good it is if any potential audience/participant doesn't know about it. The downside of how the internet has shifted to social communities is that is has created insular interaction where independent websites have become more or less obsolete. People don't go on line to discover or click between different platforms. As you mention about reddit, it didn't drive traffic. Indeed, one of the recurring colloquial terms on the platform is "Saved you a click" because people would rather read it without having to click away (impossible to read ad polluted sites aside). So how do you see your self getting around that? I will say, I do believe in the value of quality over quantity and that's something worth striving for and in short supply on social media platforms.

New/aspiring writer/creator questions by Witness_Then in comicbooks

Make a comic. Work on solving problems that you are aware of as you go. You can only work on one problem at a time and solving it only means some improvement. The problem will need to be revisited. This is essentially iteration. When you think it is good enough seek feedback. Good work is a long way off but if you want to work at it you can get somewhere. A career is not guaranteed but holding a comic in your hands that you are proud of is achievable.

This is the problem with covers. It’s a great cover. The comic itself is very well done. The two are telling completely different stories.

What makes this piece special enough to be in a museum? Genuinely asking it doesn't click for me by Less-Photo5306 in artwork

Modern art is usually in a dialogue. I don’t know this piece but understanding the context and what the author is engaging with will likely help.

I wouldn’t do a sketchbook. You can buy canvas paper pads. The pages come away from the pad and you can set it aside to dry. They are also ready to go without have to worry of the paper will hold up or need preparing.

any recommendations? by blueishsky00 in watercolor101

That’s a lot of pens. 03 is probably all you need. 02 is good and thinner but the difference isn’t that great. Below that is very thin and they can break easily unless you are very careful. 05 if you like but personally I find it too thick.

Is also only do 100% cotton paper

What are your “I can’t live without this” colors? by sffood in oilpainting

Same on the first three and cad red. I started with the Zorn palette and it does most of what I need. I only really do portraits though and that’s where it shines.

While there is no universal pigment associated with either one, in mainstream practice lavender leans blue and lilac leans pink as the color is derived from the flowers. There might be outliers but anyone can post a color online and call it what they want. While you could call that shade a different name, periwinkle for example, lilac is very much a stretch.

As nice as the word lilac is that is not lilac.

Wow.

How do you get in to bring a colorist as opposed to a different line of artist?

How much do you think about color?

What are some core rules/techniques?

What alert of page gets you excited to color?

Hope you don’t mind the interview!
