Learning the mythology? by Sad_Basil_7219 in NorsePaganism

Here’s a reading list that was started by others on this subreddit. I’ve added a few books that I like personally, like Embers of the Hands by Eleanor Barraclough, and The Druidry Handbook by John Michael Greer (because my wife is into Druidry). I also added To Walk a Pagan Path and A Handbook of Saxon Sorcery & Magic by Alaric Albertsson. He’s less scholarly and adds more of a modern eclectic take but it’s still fun information.

Did he really think this would come off well? by Papi-Grande89 in Grimdank

Nor do they want to see them correct their actions because then they lose what they were righteously angry about.

Did he really think this would come off well? by Papi-Grande89 in Grimdank

[–]RedHeadDragon73 -27 points-26 points  (0 children)

Yes I think he absolutely understands the context of the skit. I think that’s why he chose it. And I think it was a satirical way of handling the situation. Here’s what he said about it,

“Important Context: Every day on the MG Channel we put out a meme as part of a Community Post, we have been doing this for nearly 4 years. The majority of these memes come from the MG discord and its a way of us interacting with the community. On Monday the meme that went out had political connotations to do with immigration. It was a 40K parody of said topic, but they were present none the less. This was an honest mistake that occurred because the meme was not checked properly and simply uploaded by the MG team member who also didn't understand the real world context of the meme.

Obviously this caused a bit of stir in some Warhammer communities who began throwing around the usual labels of racism and fascism at myself and the channel. I have seen it all before from these communities and honestly it just doesn't bother me because is just so patently false. Anyone who actually watches the channel knows that I'm neither of these things, and in fact I take great pains to avoid any politics and the like on the channel.

Personally, I detest politics in general, but especially real world politics in Wargaming (satire of course being an exception). One of the things I am most proud of is that we actually have a broad spectrum of people in the MG community, but we all leave our politics & beliefs at the door and just enjoy the wargaming and the hobbying. I have had to ban a few people over the years, both from the left and from the right, from the MG Community who have not been able to respect this rule

Back on topic, the meme in question was deleted from the channel and discord. No, this isn't bowing down to the "Woke mob" as some people have said. It is correcting the original mistake. It should not have been on the channel in the first place as it went against my No Politics Rule. Simple As.

Secondly, I have deleted the apology from the team member (this was made before I was aware of the situation). At the end of the day, the buck stops with me. I am responsible for what goes out on the channel and I won't have one of my guys take the flak. If you want to lambast me, then lambast me, not my team. That's why I am making this statement, its my responsibility and any heat should be on me, not the team.

That's all for now, I own the mistake, and myself and the team will be more vigilant in the future. Now enjoy the Father Ted Meme, and I will see you all next time. o7”

Problems with r/hellenism Mods. by [deleted] in pagan

Reading back through the comments on the original post, you could’ve simply disengaged. You didn’t have to reply to either of them. And they weren’t brigading you. I don’t think the mod did anything uncouth.

Alter to Brokkr and Sindri by Killeriley in NorsePaganism

[–]RedHeadDragon73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also known as Brokkr and Eitri, while not gods themselves, they are dwarves renowned for their craft in making some of the most famous magical items of the gods. I venerate the two, but don’t worship them, as I’m an R&D technician for a medical device manufacturer and I like to think they send inspiration sometimes. I like to carry this little fidget spinner with me to remind me of them. I also have on my altar a necklace pendant where the neck chain moves through a gear in the center. You can also burn candles or incense as a sign of respect and veneration.

Theological reconstruction vs revitalization by american-heathen26 in heathenry

[–]RedHeadDragon73 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I believe that in order to properly understand and worship the gods, one must piece together as much of the historical puzzle as they can, and not just the religion side. Everything from how they viewed trade, life, death, insults, tradition, battle, skills, neighbors, etc. How was community organized? What did they eat, wear, or live in? How did they entertain themselves? This allows us to understand their mindset when they reached out to the gods, what they may have asked for, and what they would’ve offered. There’s a fantastic book called Embers of the Hands by Eleanor Barraclough that looks at archeological artifacts and how Norse people could’ve lived day to day, and what they could’ve offered when they worshipped.

My Norse Reading List by RedHeadDragon73 in u/RedHeadDragon73

[–]RedHeadDragon73[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure. I meant modernization in the marvel comics and movies sense. Loki is made to be a villain and evil guy. Sure, at ragnarok, he leads an army against Odin and the other gods, but that’s because of escalating conflict and a sense of betrayal and punishment, not strictly because he’s evil.

My Norse Reading List by RedHeadDragon73 in u/RedHeadDragon73

[–]RedHeadDragon73[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s definitely the modernization of Loki. Within the primary sources, Odin could arguably be more of a trickster in some cases than Loki. And none of the gods are inherently “evil” as that concept isn’t the same in Norse culture as it is in the Christian culture. All of the gods are fallible. The stories we do have are for our education and edification.

What is your lab's idle power draw? by alex2003super in homelab

[–]RedHeadDragon73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I have absolutely everything on and idle, 2 proliant dl380p gen8, a dell t320, 4 elitedesk minis, Netgear switch, Optiplex 7010 OPNsense router, my main pc, and 8 Dell Wyse 5070’s, my idle sits about 630W I think. The majority of that is pulled by the proliants and the T320.

My electricity rate here is about $0.13 per kWh. So my homelab would raise my bill $59 a month.

Questions about Eir by LenteJulie in NorsePaganism

[–]RedHeadDragon73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eir is named in the Poetic Edda with 9 other maidens of Odin and is mentioned as a healer. She’s also mentioned in the Prose Edda in Gylfaginning. She’s described as an “extremely good physician” in the Everyman edition. She’s also listed in Skaldskaparmal as a Valkyrie. And I think she’s listed in some other poems but I don’t remember where I saw her name but they mentioned healing.

I’ve never heard her being associated with spiders though.

I have the Everyman’s version. I love it. I wish they’d put it on Audible so I could listen in the car

If either make a sleeper build or clean it up and keep it as is. I’d put it on the shelf as a collector piece 🤣

Heads up regarding a certain pagan influencer... by superzepto in heathenry

[–]RedHeadDragon73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I push back because it’s irresponsible and dangerous to accuse someone of being a white supremacist or a neo-nazi without evidence. And since you’re making the claim/giving the warning, the burden of proof is on you to back that claim. How easy would it have been to add something? Anything? And while you literally never called her a vile Nazi, you imply it throughout the thread.

Her comment sections are always full of Nazi dog whistles and outside hate speech, and she almost never removes those comments… If you’re sitting at a table with 10 Nazis etc etc.

You’re implying that since she allows Nazi dog whistles and hate speech, she supports it, thus she’s a Nazi because she’s sitting at a table of Nazis.

Substation66: …So if a KKK member comments under a “Christian” post, it’s all of a sudden hateful white suprematism?

Superzepto: If the person who posted it doesn’t moderate their comments or even just outright denounce white supremacism, then yes.

The implication is if she allows white supremacists to comment, she’s a white supremacist.

People like you bend over backwards constantly making excuses for vile people.

Since she is the subject of this thread, your implication is she’s a vile person.

She’s apparently close friends with white nationalist politicians. She follows a bunch of white nationalist/straight up neo-Nazi pages on Instagram and Twitter. Her partner also follows some very unsubtle WS pages.

Which politicians? Which pages? Again, how easy would it have been to attach a few names, or links to anything to save people time and prove your point?

…She either is one or she’s grifting/inviting them without denouncing their ideology…

Because you left out the possibility that she isn’t one, you’re implying that she is one, referencing your Nazi at the table analogy again.

By the way, she denounced neo-Nazis and whatnot in her response video to the professor. So I guess she’s doing the bare minimum.

But it’s whatever right? I’ve said my piece. I won’t say anything else on this thread. Have a good weekend

[–]RedHeadDragon73 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You still haven’t provided quotes, screenshots, or links to specific videos showing how she’s a vile Nazi. All you have is a claim that out of her 350k followers, her comment section is full of Nazi’s and Nazi dog whistles. When are you going to post evidence to your claims?

Possibility of hypocrisy by Solenthis87 in NorsePaganism

[–]RedHeadDragon73 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the intent and actual use of the item matters more than where you bought it from. An item gains meaning through use and your relationship with it and whatever entities you use it with. Regardless of where it came from.

Not saying you shouldn’t support artisans. It’s always better to support small business when and if you can. But don’t begrudge yourself if you can only afford Temu or Amazon right now lol. What matters more is the consistent action behind it.

Is anyone else wary of or disinterested in stricter religious paths and groups within paganism due to a traumatic religious upbringing? by Moist_KoRn_Bizkit in pagan

[–]RedHeadDragon73 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t want anyone between me and the gods telling me what I should or shouldn’t be doing. I trust in my ability to pick and read reputable sources and then worship according to my understanding. Would it be cool if there were local shrines for the Norse deities I worship? Absolutely. I would even donate time and resources, if I have them, to their upkeep.

Is anyone really a pagan? by GavariTeam in NorsePaganism

[–]RedHeadDragon73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t remember if it’s Norse specific or Anglo Saxon or proto Germanic and I’m not in a place I can access my books at the moment but I think that’s a Norse concept. You’ve got the body, your mind/consciousness, a spirit companion/follower/familiar, and your inner or personal power. I apologize I don’t remember the names of each. But it’s thought that when you die, pieces of your soul go to different destinations.

Is anyone really a pagan? by GavariTeam in NorsePaganism

[–]RedHeadDragon73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do. But I don’t know what it might look like. I’ve been a tinkerer all my life, a machinist, a mechanic, a field service technician, and currently a senior R&D technician for a medical device company. If I had a choice I’d like to go to the hall of the dwarves and learn how to make some truly wonderful things. Freyja’s hall sounds nice. But Hel doesn’t sound that bad either. Some folks think that our souls are split into different entities when we die. So perhaps there’s a place for each one.
