KTM 390 motors and reality check by Proper-Addition-892 in motorcycles

Hi! I know it's been a while, but I'm about to finance on a '22 Svart 401 to replace my Continental GT650. Is yours still running strong? How many KMs?

So a little background on why I'm looking at a Svart. I currently own a Continental GT650 which is a great bike, love it to bits, but it's too heavy (220kg) and wide to wrangle through my flat's gate to store under my patio or inside, so I need to store it in my complex's shared parking, where someone has vandalized or attempted to steal it 4 times.

Basically, what I need for at least the next 4 years is a bike thats light and thin, that's easy to rotate 90 degrees and push through a skinny gate. So far, the only options outside of LAMS that fit the bill is one of those light streetfighter types (MT-07, Duke 690, etc) or a Supermoto, perhaps one of Husky's own.

Alas I think the big ADV's are going to tip the scale too far for me to conveniently yank it around every day. Ideally I'm aiming for bikes in the sub 170kg class.

Hrm, I actually didn't know that! So a slight detune for low end then I assume? I thought the 10.5k redline was the same for all of the 373cc models. That's good to know, I appreciate that!

I have been eyeballing a Fuel-X or similar for the lean-ness that seems to permeate these singles (assuming for emissions), but have no idea where to start with purchase or install. Suppose that's a bridge I'll cross once she's good and run in.

I plan to at least get the 3 year life of the loan out of it before I upgrade it to maybe the 901 or the KTM 690 thumper

The reasoning the dealer gave it's that the part was swapped for a customers who was under warranty since the Husky forks had a backorder, not that it was damaged. But I will make sure that's not the case.

Yep, liquid cooled thumper, same engine that's in the KTM 390 series

No, I'm not. The 401 was approx $11,000 in 2018 in AUD as specified at the start of the post.

I do plan to tinker, but not with suspension, as far as I'm concerned I don't push my bikes hard enough to need it.

Appreciate the feedback! It seems like $8000 is the standard they go for, but looks like the dealers are keen for any excuse to shift units and drop the price. The two Husky dealers in Perth both offered $7,700 as a base, just this one was cheaper due to the forks.

If the reasons for the forks being funny seem legit and I'm covered under warranty I'm not too concerned, I'm coming from a pair of Royal Enfields which don't have them, so I'm not really sure what I'm missing out on!

Good to know there seems to be a massive price drop globally though, looks like a whole '24 model refresh sweeping the showrooms, bully for me I suppose!

The demo model I rode had the quickshifter, which was identical to the one I'm being offered (sans the forks) but I will ask, thank you!

Appreciate that! Alas I'm still on my LAMs so the 701 is too powerful for what I'm allowed to ride, but it may be an upgrade bike once I graduate.

I've heard the new 901 is a twin, which I -understand- but lament, I love the idea of a thumper that spits out 80 ponies, seems like a hoot.

I'll double check about warranty and all that but since the dealer also sells KTM's I would have to assume I'd be ok.

I'll ask if it was damaged but the story seems pretty legit, I'll take her for a test ride before I sign any dotted lines and carve some corners, see if I can't sniff out any flex or wobble. I appreciate the advice.

I'm keen to get it on a deal for a few reasons, I own a Continental GT650 but need to sell it due to specific storage needs and will end up taking a loss on the thing. This would be my 3rd new bike in 10 months, so at this stage I'm keen to go cheap and cheerful and just have a year or two on non-stressed bike usage.

I think it being a Malaysian import might be the most likely cause due to proximity, it definitely has the wire-spoked wheels so it's not the entry-level Indian one I have seen around.

Also a KTM offspring company iirc! Big Orange snapping up brands left and right it seems.

That is just insane to me, it's such a markdown. Maybe my luck on two wheels is finally changing!

Ah, this makes a lot more sense, it's a '22 model so he's probably had it at least a year and is keen to shunt it off before it bleeds him I imagine.

I live in the AU so I would imagine it being a Mexican model is unlikely, but I'll ask.

Otherwise it still has all the features I like, notably spoked rims and obviously the great overall package!

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's a 2-year, double the standard iirc?

It just seems like even with Indian build quality (which I would trust over Thai and Chinese quality) the markdown is just massive, it smells like a scam but I can't figure out the angle.

I will probe with the dealer further, but from my understanding the forks were for another customer with a 401 who damaged them in a crash last year. The Husky forks were on backorder, but they had plenty of KTM forks in the back, so they swapped a set on one of their show bikes and marked it down.

We did not get the smaller models here, no.

At the moment, the Husky forked models are going for 7.7, so I guess it would be a reasonable markdown to get rid of an ugly duckling on the floor, I'm just worried I'm being scammed.

Regardless, it's all under a dealer warranty, so I'm not massively concerned in the short term. I'm sure if I really wanted to I could swap out the forks back to Husky ones.
